I have to work a lot with 1000s of textfiles with different tools, so I used to use detox and txt2regex back my good - now more better - old Gentoo days. I miss them sooo much.
I'm also interested in sprog, read about that on perl.com.

Detox is unnecessary... Just use quotation marks for files with nonstandard names when you're working from the command line. Then again, I suppose it could come in handy if you're working with very large numbers of files/directories with nonstandard names.
