System update messed up fonts [FIXED]

I just pacman -syu'd, and for some reason some fonts have changed.

For example, I think the font in which I'm reading what I'm writing right now (I mean, the font used in this box in the browser) is the same, but the font used by pcmanfm and medit (to name two examples) have changed.

It is particularly annoying for medit. Here's an example of what it looks: http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/3609 … 212024.png

How can I go back to the font config I had?

Figure out what package you updated to have the issue.

Perhaps somebody with a more keen eye can spot the troublesome ones? I thought freetype should have been the one, but I downgraded & restarted X, to no avail.

What font are you using in medit? Do other fonts look different too?

It's also claws-mail, now that I notice, and it's using the sans font, and the monospace font, which are looking funny... but perhaps there are more. I don't know what fonts I was using before.

I'm just guessing, but maybe it has something to do with gtk. What DE/wm do you use?

I use Fluxbox. I think you may be right; I've launched a qt app (qtbittorrent) and it looks the same...

I tried downgrading gtk2 and gtk3 to the last version, to no avail.

My guess would be freetype2-2.4.6-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz....

Aha! It was freetype. I said:

"I thought freetype should have been the one, but I downgraded & restarted X, to no avail."

It seems restarting X was not enough, I had to logout-login.

Anyway, I'll hold on to this version of freetype (2-2.4.4-2). I don't understand why it changed the way it did though.

Always take Allan's word over mine. Glad you worked it out. I've been playing with fluxbox too lately and I kinda like it.

I had the same problem after that freetype2 upgrade. For some reason, xft font hinting (and anti-aliasing) was disabled after the upgrade. To fix it, I had to add the following lines to my ~/.Xresources:

Xft.dpi:        96
Xft.antialias:  true
Xft.rgba:       rgb
Xft.hinting:    true
Xft.hintstyle:  hintslight

Your rgba and dpi settings may be different, but those are the most common. Also, to make your GTK2 apps display the appropriate font, make sure you have a properly configured ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file. Mine looks like:

gtk-icon-theme-name = "nuoveXT2"
gtk-theme-name = "Clearlooks"
gtk-font-name = "FreeSans 10"

I had the same problem. Hint from nbtrap won't work (for me).
I think here nothing about hinting or antialiasing (in my case only line-height for monospace fonts is changed).

Oops, I forgot to mention one thing. You also have to add the following line to your ~/.xinitrc before the exec command:

xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources

So my .xinitrc looks like:

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
  for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"

xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
exec ck-launch-session ~/.xautorunrc-dwm

Just make sure you add that one line before the line beginning with "exec". Don't touch anything else.

You and the TC may be experiencing a different problem than I had. Nevertheless, it won't hurt to try my suggestions.

tried with no succes.
downgrading solves the problem, but maybe here is better fix) i'm waiting for response from developers in mainstream bugtracker.

I have the same problem after the upgrade i can't see my fonts in anti-aliasing mode, I've tried the nbtrap solution but it didn't worked for me, I want to downgrade the version of freetype to the 2-2.4.4-2 but I don't have the package anymore in my system, Is there a way to find the freetype 2-2.4.4-2 version somewhere??...

You really can't see fonts in anti-aliased mode? You mean fonts disappeared or fonts looks horrible? (my english not very well too

anyway, if you want to downgrade you need:
1. installed "abs"
2. then get sources and build

sudo abs extra/freetype2
cp -r /var/abs/extra/freetype2/ /tmp/ && cd /tmp/freetype2
# edit PKGBUILD, replace version to 2.4.5
makepkg --skipinteg -i

if build fail when downloading sources from sourceforge, download file with your browser and try again.
