Gray in GTK theme is now purple, WTF?

I just tried out a different GTK2 theme (GothicAndBlue), then switched back to the Clearlooks-Edge theme I was using before... And discovered that things which had been gray were now a shade of purple. No, this is not an illusion resulting from my temporary use of a darker theme - parts of the GTK theme that had had matching colors before now had mismatched colors. Tabs, for example, were the original grey, while the light gray foreground around certain unselected text had been replaced by pink, and normally grey "blank" areas of windows were lavender - the tab and window colors were actually mismatched.

The Clearlooks-Bright theme is also affected - selected text in it has turned pink instead of the original light gray. It's as if my computer is interpreting certain specific colors completely wrong.

On top of this, Gnome's theme preview has suddenly stopped working.

I tried removing and reinstalling GTK2, but that didn't do a thing.

Does anyone have a clue of what's going on? :?

Gnome also seems to start quite a bit slower, all of the sudden.

Edit: Hmm, this is weird... Parts of this bulletin board that ought to be grey are pink. I would wonder if something has gone wrong with my monitor... Except that only certain shades of grey have turned purple, and others have stayed as they were before.

Screenshot it.

If the screenshot is demented on our screens, that means its not your hardware. If we can see the screenshot fine, its a hardware problem. And if it is a software problem the screenie will help.

How about this GMPC playlist? Is every second line pale gray, or pale pink?

And with the Clearlooks-Bright theme: is the selected (but in the background) text gray or pink? How about the little theme preview boxes, which have decided not to work like they should for some unfathomable reason?

First one is all grey.
Gmpc playlist, every line is the same, white.
Third one, it's ever so slightly pink, but only very slightly.

Check any graphics card connections, and if it's a laptop, locate the graphics card and maybe give it a knock.

On my laptop, theres a connection which comes loose, occassionally this has caused my screen to have pink shades around the place, similar to what you describe. For me, pressing t, or y, with a tiny bit of force, clicks it back.......

Your screenshots prove that there is a problem.
I don't know what it is.
Try:
a) removing .gtkrc* in your home directory
b) reinstalling your theme

Iphitus: Yep, I'm not surprised by what you say, especially considering what I said about this BB - that parts of it are purple that ought to be gray.

Rose: Are you saying that the screens look pink to you? I've tried reinstalling the theme, and the only .gtkrc file I have is .gtkrc-1.2-gnome2 (normal for Gnome, has no theme info in it). I've tried reinstalling the theme as well, and switching to other themes, and that doesn't change anything, so I'm inclined to think this is a video card problem.

Granted I don't have the best eyesight in the world but all three screenshots look grey to me, I don't see any pink. *shrugs*

Disconnected and reconnected monitor, then opened up computer and vacuumed out all the dust in there. Everything is still tinged pink. I think my monitor may be starting to go. :evil:

Okay, here I'm viewing the Arch forums with Firefox on Damn Small Linux. Look at the areas circled in red:

Now here's a screenshot of the same page from Arch:

Look at the same area, again circled in red. Does it seem a bit darker, with a violet tint, or is it the same?

Note that both screenshots are in 16-bit color.

Hah, problem solved! My mistake... the DSL screenshot was in 24-bit color, not 16-bit. Switching to 24-bit in my xorg.conf solved the problem. *bonks head on desk*

(If you're wondering why I was using 16-bit color, it's because I was messing around with DRI. Well, it looks like I should stick with 24-bit... For some reason, my system seems to really dislike 16-bit color, not only displaying the wrong colors but being much less responsive. :? Probably something going on between X and my crappy video hardware.)

Yes, especially the first one. I'm sure that colors are alright on my monitor, although I'm using 16 bit color.

There's so obviously pink in those screenshots. And I know what that looks like because I run a pink GTK theme.
How can you not see it? Perhaps I simply have a good monitor (I don't think so though).
