Unless you want stick with an out of date kernel, say yes. Read the announcement on the main archlinux.org page and this thread for a couple tweaks that are worth doing.

you'll mean no?

He means: answer 'no' if you prefer the old kernel, answer 'yes' if you want the new kernel.
'Unless' means 'if not'.

fettouhi wrote:Well that is fine for grub but for grub2 it is generally advised NOT to manually edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg but to use one of the scripts to do the edit. Since I just switched to grub2 (did a refresh reinstall of Arch 64bit) I don't exactly what scripts to use in order to change grub.cfg. Hence the question.
For any GRUB2 users that haven't figured it out yet, you just need to delete the symlinks and then run
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
and it will automagically update your grub.cfg. In fact you can leave the symlinks there if you are paranoid as it seems grub-mkconfig ignores them.
That's what I thought, many thanks .

just did a pacman -Syu and restarted, everything is fine!
I don't have grub2 on this machine, I'll post later about grub2

I do not know if my problem is related to this so sorry if not
I did a fresh installation yesterday and everything was fine but i screwed up something with mkinitcpio and found no way to repair it so i installed again. This time 3.0 came in and since then i tried it 6 or 7 times now.
Sometimes there were error messages about disks or partitioning (first time i use a SSD). last time i got a GRUB error 6 even after writing a new partition table to the mbr.
I did a net installation. Is it possible to do a net installation at the moment with the 2010.5 installation CD? Will do a core install from cd now but i am just interested.

I think you can try using an out of date mirror to install arch and later you will update to linux 3 kernel.

I use encrypted partitions, but not LVM. I have no problem so far.

I'm really impressed with how smooth the devs make it to upgrade!

It isn't. The symlinks are there so people won't start banging their heads against the wall when the system doesn't boot after the upgrade. So you could say that the symlinks are bloat and it is fine to remove them.
In the true spirit of arch linux there would be no symlinks and if anyone upgraded the kernel without seeing the frontpage first they would all cry saying that arch devs are mean and everybody else would have to watch annoying spam on the forums about this yet again

What is the exact command that i have to use to remove the symlinks? i am afraid to break something. Should i just delete the vmlinuz26 , kernel26.img and kernel26-fallback.img????

Please read the previous posts. The thread is not that long yet.

Hi all.
Firstly, this isnt a fresh install, i've been building my arch system for the past 6 months, i just figured the installation thread was where this should go..
So, basically im getting the dreaded GRUB Error 15: File not found at boot.. The only thing i can recall that may have messed around with anything is that i cleared my pacman cache yesterday because i was getting errors that my ./ partition was full.. which it was, so after clearing the pacman cache i regained some much needed memory..... I did not however touch anything in /dev/disk/by-uuid/........
so.. I dont have a live cd on me at the moment.. I will try burn myself an ubuntu cd tomorrow.. but this is the exact error im getting:
Booting 'Arch Linux'
root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/a627d28d-a6f4-49a0-8faa-05564bca5dad vga=865 ro
Error 15: File not found
Press any key to continue...
My grub/menu.lst looks like this
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/a627d28d-a6f4-49a0-8faa-05564bca5dad vga=865 ro
initrd /kernel26.img
Im pretty sure my ./ partition is sda3.... But i cant run any commands untill i have a live cd.. but if anyone can help in the mean time (or has had this problem before) please!! I cannot lose this install... not only the files.. but the effort that has gone into building my system!

Hey there!
In the kernel line, replace "vmlinuz26" with "vmlinuz-linux".
In the initrd line, replace "kernel26.img" with "initramfs-linux.img"
See the news here: http://www.archlinux.org/news/changes-t … filenames/

Phew.. I thought it may have been due to the kernel update.. I did -Syu yesterday too, and i noticed that the kernel was updated from kernel26 to kernel-linux
I will try this as soon as I am home from work, and if it works, i will mark this thread as SOLVED! I hope its as simple as that! thank you for your help
Also, would that mean I should also change 'kernel26-fallback.img' to 'initramfs-linux-fallback.img' ?

Read your pacman output, your .pacnew file, the news on the front page or any one of the dozen identical threads opened on this same issue.
