I simply cannot get anything to see the internal mic. I can see the mic in alsamixer - as "internal mic" under capture. However, kmix does not see the mic - and neither does gmail video chat plugin,
I have added this line:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6
and most of its variations in every combination of files (modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, sound.conf, alsaxxx.conf etc)
As I said, Alsa can see the mic. The problem is with kmix and other software.
Any suggestions?

Did you try the microphone alsa stuff here : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dell_Studio_1555
Do that first and then see if kmix detects it.

I tried that more than a month back (one of the first things I tried) - and it doesn't work. The wiki is a little outdated I think.
On doing:
amixer sset 'Digital Input Source' 'Digital Mic 1'
I get:
amixer: Unable to find simple control 'Digital Mic 1',0

Hmm. ok then. This describes what you need to do in Ubuntu, but as you are using KDE it might not help, but perhaps give you some hints? http://chrisjean.com/2009/01/27/using-t … th-ubuntu/
