Mysql upgrade denies root user?

Hi all,
It seems every time I get an update for mysql, I can no longer log in as the root user. The first time I thought it was a fluke, but it happened again today. I have to start mysqld with the --skip-grant-tables option and reset the root password manually before I can connect again.
Anyone else experience this problem?
