reset root password

I was just trying some things and I wanted to see if I could change my root password with the usermod command, so I typed in the command
usermod -pXXXX root

This changed my password, but not to what I typed in. Now my original password doesn't work, nor the new password I typed in. Just wondered if anybody new anything.

do you have sudo setup? If not, you will probably need to boot directly into a shell...you can pass some string to grub to acheive this, but i cant remember it offhand.

no, i don't have sudo setup, Does anyone know how to boot into a shell with grup, i haven't been able to figure it out.

I think you might be able to change it by logging into single mode. Once in Grub choose whatever option it is to add boot parameters and add 'single' to the end of the line.

i believe passwordless singe user mode is a more redhat centric setup. not positive though...

reboot into grub and pass the kernel the argument "single", this should let you boot with root permissions.

I'm pretty sure arch single user mode asks for a password or CTRL+D to boot into normal mode or whatever.

maybe he could boot from a LiveCD, change the root password on the LiveCD to something he wants and then copy the respective part of /etc/shadow?

using a livecd, you simply chroot to the arch partition and run the passwd command.

There's talk elsewhere on this forum about how to use grub to run bash directly with root privleges. Can't remember how.

When in Grub, press 'e' to edit the boot option. Then add "init=/bin/bash rw" at the end to log in as root. Change password and reboot.

Glad he got it fixed... for the record, Knoppix can do it with:

sudo mount -o rw /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1
sudo chroot /mnt/hda1 passwd

...that's right if I remember correctly.

This should go in the wiki if its been brought up so much lately... I think there is something about how to do it using a live CD in there, but not the grub method. I'd do it, but I really don't feel like it right now, so I'm suggesting some other eager user take a look at it.
