pulseaudio errors when logging in

Hi all,

  I'm under Gnome 3 and I noticed some strange errors in /var/log/errors.log when I log in from gdm:

Aug  9 23:29:07 localhost pulseaudio[7237]: pid.c: Daemon already running.
Aug  9 23:29:07 localhost pulseaudio[4184]: x11wrap.c: XOpenDisplay() failed
Aug 9 23:29:07 localhost pulseaudio[4184]: module.c: Failed to load module "module-x11-publish" (argument: "display=:0"): initialization failed.
Aug  9 23:29:08 localhost pulseaudio[7300]: pid.c: Daemon already running.
Aug  9 23:29:08 localhost pulseaudio[4184]: x11wrap.c: XOpenDisplay() failed
Aug 9 23:29:08 localhost pulseaudio[4184]: module.c: Failed to load module "module-x11-publish" (argument: "display=:0"): initialization failed.

  The sound works perfectly well, but I was wondering why I'm getting these errors.
  Does anyone have the same errors or have an idea where to look? Google didn't help much...

  (this may as well belong to the beginner section)

Thanks!

Re: pulseaudio errors when logging in

Hi Muf,

Thank you very much for the link. It really looks like my problem. I'll have to figure out whether this patch is implemented in the current version of pulseaudio or not.

There may be another problem though:

First time I log in, I get only 1 error:

Aug 10 07:33:34 localhost pulseaudio[1270]: pid.c: Daemon already running.

but then if I log out and log back in:

Aug 10 07:36:09 localhost pulseaudio[1475]: pid.c: Daemon already running.
Aug 10 07:36:09 localhost pulseaudio[1210]: x11wrap.c: XOpenDisplay() failed
Aug 10 07:36:09 localhost pulseaudio[1210]: module.c: Failed to load module "module-x11-publish" (argument: "display=:0"): initialization failed.
Aug 10 07:36:10 localhost pulseaudio[1537]: pid.c: Daemon already running.
Aug 10 07:36:10 localhost pulseaudio[1210]: x11wrap.c: XOpenDisplay() failed
Aug 10 07:36:10 localhost pulseaudio[1210]: module.c: Failed to load module "module-x11-publish" (argument: "display=:0"): initialization failed.

The link you submitted doesn't explain the error I get when I first log in.

I have to go to work, but if I'm not too busy there, I'll try and see if I find something interesting online.

Cheers!

Re: pulseaudio errors when logging in

So from what I've read, it could very well be that GDM starts its own pulseaudio and it is not killed properly afterward.
I don't have access to my Arch box right now but I will give this a try tonight, since I don't really need sound enabled in GDM...
Is every Gnome 3 user experiencing this problem??

Re: pulseaudio errors when logging in

I turned off auto login and gdm is not producing some sound, you are probably right, that is it gdm + pulseaudio problem.

Re: pulseaudio errors when logging in

So I did what is said here and I now only have one error message when logging in from GDM:

Aug 10 18:08:42 localhost pulseaudio[2883]: pid.c: Daemon already running.

Seems like I still have something to figure out...

ps aux | grep pulseaudio gives just after I log in:

[frederic ~]$ ps aux | grep pulseaudio
frederic  1219  0.3  0.1 227484  5544 ?        S<sl 18:29   0:01 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start
gdm       1558  0.4  0.1 209636  4264 ?        D<s  18:36   0:00 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog
frederic  1743  0.0  0.0  10572  1004 pts/0    S+   18:36   0:00 grep pulseaudio

Edit: After a reboot, all the error messages are back, so it seems that I didn't fix anything. Will try and understand and will come back... hopefully.

Re: pulseaudio errors when logging in

I did the same as you with the same result, I think that it is probably bug. Gnome 3 is new thing and has some problems, yet.

Re: pulseaudio errors when logging in

Mmm, I don't have any error message after I disabled the Pulseaudio server on every of my user accounts using:

gnome-session-properties

And I still have sound... But it feels like a workaround to me... not a proper fix.

Re: pulseaudio errors when logging in

I don't know if is it normal but when I run gnome-session-properties I have there Pulseaudio start two times.

First commnad is

start-pulseaudio-kde

and second is

start-pulseaudio-x11

By wiki these two commnads start PA in KDE 4.

Re: pulseaudio errors when logging in

I'm afraid this still happens (double start of pulseaudio, with systemd and gdm). Should we open a bug report upstream?

Re: pulseaudio errors when logging in

Still happens... I managed to get rid of the error by changing the line

/usr/bin/pulseaudio --start "$@"

to

if ! /usr/bin/pulseaudio --check: then
        /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start "$@"
fi

in both /usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-kde and /usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11.

However, this seemed to result in the module "module-device-manager" not to be loaded, but that can be fixed by adding

load-module module-device-manager

to /etc/pulse/default.pa as suggested in ArchWiki. I think that it should not be necessary, since that module is supposed to be loaded in the script start-pulseaudio-kde. But since it stops being loaded after my tweaks, it propably means that my approach not entirely correct...
