[SOLVED] Accessing efivars on ASUS E35M1-I

Hi everyone,

I recently bought myself, what I thought to be a neat little NAS/HTPC. The mainboard features an EFI and installation went smoothly, apart from one important thing. No matter what I try, I can't get the EFI to start grub2 to boot the system.
/dev/sda1 is a 100mb FAT32 gpt partition. The rest of the system lies in an LVM. Grub2 is installed in /dev/sda1.
When I try efibootmgr I get "couldn't access EFI variables." The efivars module is inserted, of courese.
I even switched to Kernel 3.0, hoping it would help.
dmesg shows not a single sign of the EFI.
Placing an EFI shell on the USB stick at least results in the EFI GUI showing the stick as UEFI enabled device. But when I try booting from it, all I get is a flashing cursor. I waited about 10 minues without anything happening. Also the num-lock LED won't change when I press the key, so I guess, the system just hangs.
I'm relatively new to Arch, but this really gives me headache, so I'm open for any idea.

Thx in advance, greetz
Chais

Are you sure you booted in UEFI mode? If dmesg does not show any sign of UEFI, then your system has most likely booted in BIOS mode. efivars (and efibootmgr) will not work in BIOS mode. They require the kernel to be booted via UEFI to get access to UEFI Runtime Services.

Then how do I make sure to boot into EFI mode? I just dd'ed the Archboot CD on a USB stick and I admit Grub looked different than it does on my Macbook.
