So I have been experiencing this for a while now, thuderbird is my prefered mail client but If I am unable to solve this I will have to switch mail clients.
My attachments action list is empty and I am unable to populate it, that is, I cant open ANYTHING by clicking on it on thunderbird, no urls, no documents/pdfs, no video, audio, nothing.
I tried deleting the mimetypes.rdf file as the mozillazine suggested, but same problem.
I have also tried to reinstall thunderbird, same thing.
How can I fix this?
many thanks

the idea is that feature is using gnome-vfs and libgnome to get the mimetypes and we disabled that.
thunderbird 5 has fixed this because it has proper gio support.
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Because of this thread I took a look on mozconfig and noticed that something is strange:
ac_add_options --disable-official-branding
ac_add_options --enable-official-branding

will this version be on official repos sometime? I would prefer to keep my installation as is for a while than to install an AUR package for a package so critical for me.

Thunderbird 5 is the upcoming release, so will of course land in the repos once it reaches stable (expected end of the month). Can you set the application manually via "open with" directly from the attachement (e.g. /usr/bin/evince for pdf)? Keeps the setting on my install.

It doesn't give the programs available per se, it just opens up a file browser so i can select the executable. I have no idea where to look for the executable so I tend to close the window. I will try what you suggested and come back with results.
