After I upgraded the other day to kernel 3, I lost all of my sound. I've ran alsaconf and reconfigured my setup a few times, but doing so hasn't done anything. I've also checked for muted channels and nothing is muted. I know my speakers work, because I've checked them using my Ubuntu boot.
The (onboard) sound cards listed for my system are the following.
$ lspci | grep Audio
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RV710/730
Also, these are the modules I've got loaded.
$ lsmod | grep snd
snd_hda_codec_hdmi 22092 1
snd_hda_codec_via 55568 1
snd_hda_intel 22122 7
snd_hda_codec 77927 3 snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_codec_via,snd_hda_intel
snd_hwdep 6325 1 snd_hda_codec
snd_pcm 73856 5 snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec
snd_timer 19416 1 snd_pcm
snd 57786 19 snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_codec_via,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore 6146 1 snd
snd_page_alloc 7121 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm
Beyond trying to reconfigure things with alsaconf and pulseaudio volume controls, I don't know what else to do.
Edit: Some things that I've noticed are that when I try to play an mp3 in XMMS, an error box pops up stating that XMMS couldn't open audio. However, when I go to say Pandora and play something there, the output bar in pulseaudio volume control indicates that it is receiving a signal. The only problem is that no sound is coming out of my speakers. The output bar I'm referring to is the one under RV710/730 Digital Stereo (HDMI) in the output tab. Should something HDMI be loaded if I'm not using HDMI? Could this be part of my problem?

Okay, my sound is working again. I fixed the problem by changing two settings in the pulse audio volume control. The first was to turn off the RV710/730 Digital Stereo (HDMI) output device and the second was to change the Internal Audio profile to Analog Surround 5.1 Output. I don't know if the settings will remain after a reboot or some other change, but they work for now.
