Gnome3 doesn't work properly for nouveau driver

I have installed Arch on my HP dv9910 laptop and everything is working fine except Gnome3. It always starts in fallback mode. I have installed Nouveau drivers taking the suggestions from wiki and forums that it's better than the nvidia drivers.

Trying the "gnome-shell --replace" command results in a gnome3 desktop with all screwed up graphics. I can still make out the outlines and borders for sliding side panels but everything looks battered. It keeps blinking, color changes randomly, instead of windows, there are blocks of colors that disappear at random and such.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I have followed all wiki articles and related forum posts that I could find and I am posting this only after not being able to find any solution after trying for around a week.

The driver is shown as "Gallium 0.4 on softpipe" in Graphics section of System Info.

lspci command shows the following for graphics:

VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C67 [GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M] (rev a2)

This is how my xinitrc file reads:

#!/bin/sh
#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
  for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
  done
  unset f
fi

exec gnome-session

I had tried by adding "exec ck-launch-session gnome-session" to xinitrc but it results in the same issue as mentioned above. Just "exec gnome-session" results in fallback mode.

I have installed all driver components and followed all wiki instructions step by step but to no avail.

Help!

Re: Gnome3 doesn't work properly for nouveau driver

I don't think that nouveau is better: it's different, it's open source and wrt performance it is most likely worse.
Have you tried the nvidia driver?

Re: Gnome3 doesn't work properly for nouveau driver

It should work with older nvidia cards, nvidia is in a different league on later cards if set-up correctly. you need to remove all off the current drivers and install nvidia then in terminal # nvidia-xconfig that will write a new /etc/X11/xorg.con file and then you can save your settings.

If you want to try the proprietary drivers, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nv … au_drivers might be helpful, just remember to adjust to your needs (I'm not sure you want the legacy nvidia-173xx drivers).

care to install gdm and use that to login and then paste ~/.xsession-errors? don't forget to start dbus daemon

Re: Gnome3 doesn't work properly for nouveau driver

@karol: yeah I've already read that. Just hoping that some solution comes out for nouveau, if it doesnt then I'll switch fully over to the nvidia drivers. Thanks for the link anyways.

@wonder: Had tried using gdm too but the result is even worse. i'll do it again and paste the xsession-errors in around 10 mins. ( the DAEMON array of my rc.conf contains dbus, that should start the dbus at boot right?). thanks for taking interest in my problem

here's how the xsession-errors reads:

Re: Gnome3 doesn't work properly for nouveau driver

I have the same problem with GNOME 3

My video card:  VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300] (rev a1)

When I used nvidia driver I was not able to have Gnome 3 with gnome-shell. I had to uninstall it to be able to run Gnome 3 in fallback mode.

As I read some suggestion to use nouveau I used it and suddenly Gnome 3 with  gnome-shell worked. However  I had to run "modprobe nouveau" every time I wanted use Gnome 3 with  gnome-shell  .  If not I had  the "all screwed up graphics".
Finally after today arch upgrade I can not run gnome-shell at all. And I was forced to pacman -R gnome-shell. Help is appreciated.

Re: Gnome3 doesn't work properly for nouveau driver

Strangely enough, the same thing happened to my system after today's upgrade! Previously, it was running on fallback mode with the gnome-shell installed but after today's upgrade, it's screwed. The wallpaper loads up and after a second all the graphics goes haywire!! I too had to remove gnome-shell and use it in fallback mode.

Is there some issues with gnome on releases? or is it because of my system?

Re: Gnome3 doesn't work properly for nouveau driver

Tried lots and lots of things and still not being able to solve this thing.

The latest info I have is that I get this error message in dmesg after i updated the system and ran "gnome-shell --replace" command:

[drm] nouveau 0000:00:12.0: fail ttm_validate
[drm] nouveau 0000:00:12.0: validate vram_list
[drm] nouveau 0000:00:12.0: validate: -12

these were continuously repeated.

Anyone with any solutions?

Re: Gnome3 doesn't work properly for nouveau driver

i gave up and used the proprietary nvidia drivers instead and the gnome-shell is working fine. will keep on checking the nouveau drivers in future though.

@zdenekp: i think you should change to nvidia drivers too

Re: Gnome3 doesn't work properly for nouveau driver

I have a GTX 460 and the nouveau drivers are terrible for me. I have to use the nvidia drivers or nothing works. I suspect it will be this way for the foreseeable future.

Re: Gnome3 doesn't work properly for nouveau driver

Finally I am able to run GNOME3in native gnome-shell format. I kept upgrading my archlinux box and once a week I used to try pacman -Syu gnome-shell and after restarting gdm I checked results. Untill now I was forced to go back to fallback (pacman -R gnome-shell). However today it started to work properly.
