global auto-gain / normalize audio on-the-fly?

Hi!

It's been a while since I tried get rid of that annoyance: Practically every audio source always seems either to be a lot too loud or barely loud enough to hear.

Last time I tried with alsa / ladspa. The result wasn't toooo great: I wasn't always sure it did its job. And I had problems (especially with 32bit programs) on a regular basis after updates - it was sort of annoying to keep that solution working.

Haven't tried around with on-the-fly "auto-gain" / normalizing for a while now... Currently I'm trying out pulseaudio... is there anything (new?) that can help me avoid having to fiddle around with my volume control all the time?

Thx!
