I was not sure where to post this. So, I will just post it here for now in case anyone comes across this thread:
To take the computer, trash, home icons off of the desktop. Do this:
mateconftool-2 --type boolean --set /apps/caja/desktop/computer_icon_visible false
mateconftool-2 --type boolean --set /apps/caja/desktop/home_icon_visible false
mateconftool-2 --type boolean --set /apps/caja/desktop/trash_icon_visible false
I don't think there is a trash applet for the panel yet (I could not find one) so keep that in mind. To put them back change false to true. I could not find a gconf-editor alternative.

I'm having some trouble getting GDM (Mate Display Manager) to start on a clean install of Arch. Already installed xorg-server and nouveau drivers.

and gnome-mplayer make as default player

Hi Guys,
Good to know some people want to use old fashioned desktop.
I don't really like gnome 3 because I still have memory leaks with it.
Moreover I don't find it intuitive and I am not able to work efficiently with it.
To be quick I don't like it or maybe it don't like me ...
Regarding Unity, I don't like it so much too for the same reason than gnome 3 more or less.
I also have some difficulty to understand what position Canonical want to stand.
I like the idea of the perpetual innovation but I don't like this society which I think only try to have as much users as possible.
I am not sure they want to help the Linux community in general. I feel they only want to develop their community.
I would be happy to help you in this project.
I am a developer but I am not familiar in Gnome 2 API.
Just let me know if I can help you.
Anyway, good luck !
I think I will give it a try.

Good job! Fashion can change often as a wrap, useful instruments and skills with them definitely not! Gnome 2 was an excellent instrument... Good luck and more support in maintaining!

Perhaps the first half of your sentence is caused by the second?

If this project continues to make progress, I for one wouldn't mind pitching in for a donation towards an adequate web hosting solution if that's the issue. Anyone else?
Anyone have ideas of requirements and costs involved?
Perberos, would you be interested / have time to maintainin this? If not, any volunteers?

Is there a working mirror of Mate?

Why speed downloading is very low?

Why speed downloading is very low?
Probably because it's hosted on a low-bandwidth server and/or many people are downloading stuff from it.

I actually noticed this because of the Phoronix article, however, it conflicts with GNOME 3, and I don't really want to uninstall it because I still use nautilus 3.0.
libmatecanvas and libmatecomponent both conflict with GNOME 3 (both are named libcanvas.so and libcomponent.so; I would try to make a patch to rename them, but I don't know where I'd look).
Perberos, you're doing a great job with this, and the fact that you've gotten this much work done is amazing. Keep up the good work! I would help you out if I had more experience with GTK, and if I weren't so busy.
Considering how it was Linus' wish to have a GNOME 2 fork, I'm surprised that there aren't more people that are jumping to help out with this. I think that the goal should be to eventually port GNOME 2's core applications to GTK 3, because while GNOME 3 is a step down from GNOME 2, GTK 3 is a huge step up from GTK 2. Considering how applications like nautilus and GDM are already ported to GTK 3, that should be a big help; in the case of applications like GDM, it should really be a matter of removing dependencies for the GNOME 3 Shell and Fallback Panel (or, rather, modifying the fallback panel to have GNOME 2's functionality).
Currently, I've already switched to standalone compiz and xfce4-panel (I can't see myself switching back), but if I could have the GNOME 2 panel back, I'd be very happy.

The "Linus hates Gnome 3" news is still pretty fresh https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=123782 - just 4 weeks have passed.
If you consider this thread to be the official Mate DE announcement, it precedes Linus' plea by quite a while.
Mate official page and the repos are having hard time keeping up with the load so the project could surely get some help.
Perberos edited the OP today, so he keeps an eye on the thread. There are some contact informations, so if anyone is interested, feel free to get in touch with him and discuss pooling funds or whatever.

Where should I post errors?
I have problem with clock applet - it doesn't show up . There are also no sound manager/mixer. Is there will be some metapackage for pulseaudio like in old Gnome 2?
Thank you for reanimating the best Linux DE .
(sorry for my english ;p)

^ I am having same problem. last arch update break the file manager and the clock applet.
[perberos@matsusoft Desktop]$ /usr/lib/mate-panel/clock-applet
/usr/lib/mate-panel/clock-applet: error while loading shared libraries: libgnutls.so.26: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
[perberos@matsusoft Desktop]$ whereis libgnutls.so.26
libgnutls.so: /usr/lib/libgnutls.so /usr/lib/libgnutls.so.28
[perberos@matsusoft Desktop]$
lol
Ugly fix:
run as root
ln -s /usr/lib/libgnutls.so /usr/lib/libgnutls.so.26

A full system update should fix it, not sure if it's the case if you're using gnome 2.

Well, I know that, but I assumed that people would have started jumping on the bandwagon once they learned that a GNOME 2 fork existed. GNOME 2 was the most widely used DE until GNOME 3 came out, and breaking that apart really isn't good for the people that were using it. I'm sure that at least a few of those would be programmers that are willing to help out with something like this.
