Hi,
i have some problems with my wifi-firmware. As I have a Thinkpad T42, i need the madwifi driver. Unfortunately, i cant get him by pacman -S, so i trietd to make him using the AUR tarball. Now, there come up some dependency errors. Some of the I could solve already. But i do not manage to get madwifi-utils-svn maked/compiled.
This packed is needed by madwifi, but im really not able to nstall it. After I unzipped madwifi-utils-svn, i typed "makepkg". After 1-2 sec. there appears the error:
" ==> ERROR: A failure occured in build().
Aborting... "
Could anyone help me with this? Thanks!

Just this error, nothing else is printed before?
Have you tried http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=49710 ? madwifi-utils-svn are needed for madwifi-svn, which is for stock arch 2.6 kernel. Are you still using kernel 2.6?

Well, before this error, the bash sys:
==> SVN checkout done or server timeout
==>Starting make...
/bin/sh: line 0: cd: /lib/modules/3.0-ARCH/build: No such file or directory
Makefile.inc:66: *** /lib/modules/3.0-ARCH/build is missing, please set KERNELPATH. Stop.
==> ERROR: (...)
Yes, i forgot the version...im sing 3.0. Could this have caused the error?

You should read the wiki on how to use AUR..
Should I type pacman -S linux-headers?
Yes, but you need to understand why it's needed.
Please use http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=49710 if you're using linux 3 kernel.
Edit: Have you read https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=124086 ?

okay, i installed linux-headers by pacman -S and the mawifi packet you sugested. Now, there is a dependency error:
"Missing dependencies:
linux-headers<3.0.2"
So, my linux-headers packet is to new (3.0.3-1). Is there any way to get the older one?

Thanks, wifi works now . Is there any possibility to activate the wlan LED with madwifi/ath driver?
And, another question:
To save energy, i want to be able to deaktivate the wifi controller without restart. What would the best way to do this? ip link set ath0 down?

I see
iwconfig wlan0 power on
to enable Wi-Fi power management, but I have no idea what that means.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless_Setup
No idea about the LED either.

I thought I read a while ago madwifi is deprecated, and the necessary drivers are in the official kernel now.

That's right, I posted a link to such discussion a couple hours ago.

The year 2007 called, it wants its wifi driver back.
On a serious note: No, you don't. madwifi has been replaced years ago, development has stalled years ago and you definitely don't need it.
