I've tried SMPlayer, VLC and Gnome MPlayer - I've attempted to play them in XV and X11 output settings and still only audio. I've even tried converting them with FFMPEG and Mencoder with no luck. I installed all of my codecs with the instructions from the archwiki page, so is this just not possible or am I missing something?
Why someone would rip LPI instructional videos in a Windows only format I have no idea...

Maybe it's a requirement for the exam: figure out how to play wmv files ;P
I can play http://sourceforge.net/projects/vspeech … V/download - which is identified as 'Microsoft ASF' - w/ mplayer2 w/o a problem: both audio and video.

MPlayer2 still didn't work. Never had a problem with Microsoft ASF files, just MSS2, and I never did find a Linux solution to this issue... I spent a couple days looking around too. I ended up just copying the files over to my Windows drive and finally got it to play after downloading Media Player Classic Home Cinema. They didn't even work using VLC on Windows... That was weird
I don't really like having multimedia files on my Windows drive. I mainly just use it for work, games and netflix... I have to look for a decent video converter for Windows now... I'm not very well versed in proprietary software... But thanks for your help anyway.

Hi Mr_ED-horsey,
Two things come to mind for me. First, it's far easier to get high quality help on audio/video playback problems if there's an example file. Second, have you gone to the source and asked them why they're still using antiquated, low quality, non-standardized (by any modern standard) encodes?

Switching to Windows hardly counts as a solution. ![]()
This guy has instructions using Windows Media Encoder. MS suggests moving up to Expression Encoder. Both were/are freeware. ![]()
