[SOLVED] Flash video plays sound, but gnome 3 sound is not working

Hi guys,

I'm using Gnome 3 and haven't been able to get audio working entirely.

I can hear sound when I play flash videos. But I couldn't hear anything if I play videos using VLC or mplayer. Also, whenever I want to test my speakers from Sound settings -> Hardware, the window always closes and nothing gets played.

I've tried running VLC from the terminal to see if there's any useful information, but it only displays this:

How do I fix this?

Do all your alsamixer levels look right?

In alsamixer, the default output is 100% and nothing seems to be muted.

Also, I just noticed that Gnome does not play any sound at all (it's supposed to have a short 'click' sound when GDM starts, right?)

EDIT: Also, speaker-test -c 2 does not produce any output. Still, I am listening to a YouTube video as I try different things here, though.

Not sure. I do not use gdm. If you do an "lsmod | grep snd" and a "cat /etc/group | grep audio" does everything look like it should? I am assuming the second should be at least since you get sound in flash. Does the sound work in totem?

What should the output of "lsmod | grep snd" look like?

For the second one, yes, I have my user name listed in the audio group.

While VLC plays my videos fine (except for the sound), Totem couldn't play the files. When opening an audio file, it says there is an error with gstreamer. When opening a video file, it says there is a datastream error.

If you're using gnome, everything should default to a (working) pulseaudio setup. Look through the pulseaudio wiki's instructions.

Nevermind on the lsmod thing. You have sound in flash so some sound modules in the kernel must be loaded. Are you sure that you have all the codecs you need? Have you tried reinstalling gstreamer? Have you Syu'ed lately?

I tried the wiki, and everything it told me to install, I ended up reinstalling. So I think all the required modules are present already.

It's very weird that it seems Gnome is not playing any sound at all (during login, or when an error shows up, or when I test my speakers) yet flash seems to be working fine..

Very strange indeed. Does not make any sense to me at all. All I can think of is going into "gnome-control-center sound" and making sure you don't have sound muted or something.

Wow, I did just that and I found something else: the flash sound keeps playing even though the gnome-control-center sound is muted. Is it possible that flashplugin is messing up Gnome sound?

Not sure. They may be unrelated though. If you test speaker sound (front center test I mean) as root do you get sound?

I tried uninstalling flashplugin, restarted my computer, and then the sound came back on (videos, test speakers). When I install flashplugin, the sound stopped again.

Now the question is how do I make flashplugin work without killing Gnome's sound..

EDIT: found out how. lib32-libpulse is not installed. I thought pulse support comes by default, but it's an optional dependency. So flash sound and regular video sound works now !

Are you using a 32 bit flash version on a 64 bit system? There is something similar on the alsa wiki.
