update to gnome 3 = frozen desktop with nvidia [solved]

Hello, I have a few questions after running pacman (probably been 9 months since last run..) I'm running a geforce 7300 le on this system. Xorg freezes up at startup using both kde and gnome as wm, running custom kernel 2.6.30 and 275.21 nvidia drivers.
I can get ICEWM to work. I have  renamed the old config directories, and even setup a new user with no previous configs and it still locks up. It is not outputting any new info to .session-error. Here is the Xorg.0.log

Are you really using 2.6.30 or is it a typo?

[ 41042.126] (WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Unable to read EDID for display device CRT-0

That's certainly one of your problems - how do you connect to your monitor?

Nope you read it correctly, using 2.6.30 for consistency with my other boxes. I connect with DVI. Thanks for your assistance!

Is it a straight DVI or a DVI-to-VGA thingy?

Tried a few things. KDE also hangs before desktop.. Almost sounds like an Xorg/driver issue from what I have been reading. Below is my config

Re: update to gnome 3 = frozen desktop with nvidia [solved]

Same results, but they are in 1024X768, and it looks a little confused about the driver..

31/07/2011 17:29:07
31/07/2011 17:29:07 ------------------ USEFUL INFORMATION ------------------
31/07/2011 17:29:07 X DAMAGE available on display, using it for polling hints.
31/07/2011 17:29:07 To disable this behavior use: '-noxdamage'
31/07/2011 17:29:07
31/07/2011 17:29:07 Most compositing window managers like 'compiz' or 'beryl'
31/07/2011 17:29:07 cause X DAMAGE to fail, and so you may not see any screen
31/07/2011 17:29:07 updates via VNC. Either disable 'compiz' (recommended) or
31/07/2011 17:29:07 supply the x11vnc '-noxdamage' command line option.
31/07/2011 17:29:07
31/07/2011 17:29:07 Wireframing: -wireframe mode is in effect for window moves.
31/07/2011 17:29:07 If this yields undesired behavior (poor response, painting
31/07/2011 17:29:07 errors, etc) it may be disabled:
31/07/2011 17:29:07 - use '-nowf' to disable wireframing completely.
31/07/2011 17:29:07 - use '-nowcr' to disable the Copy Rectangle after the
31/07/2011 17:29:07 moved window is released in the new position.
31/07/2011 17:29:07 Also see the -help entry for tuning parameters.
31/07/2011 17:29:07 You can press 3 Alt_L's (Left "Alt" key) in a row to
31/07/2011 17:29:07 repaint the screen, also see the -fixscreen option for
31/07/2011 17:29:07 periodic repaints.
31/07/2011 17:29:07
31/07/2011 17:29:07 XFIXES available on display, resetting cursor mode
31/07/2011 17:29:07 to: '-cursor most'.
31/07/2011 17:29:07 to disable this behavior use: '-cursor arrow'
31/07/2011 17:29:07 or '-noxfixes'.
31/07/2011 17:29:07 using XFIXES for cursor drawing.
31/07/2011 17:29:07 GrabServer control via XTEST.
31/07/2011 17:29:07
31/07/2011 17:29:07 Scroll Detection: -scrollcopyrect mode is in effect to
31/07/2011 17:29:07 use RECORD extension to try to detect scrolling windows
31/07/2011 17:29:07 (induced by either user keystroke or mouse input).
31/07/2011 17:29:07 If this yields undesired behavior (poor response, painting
31/07/2011 17:29:07 errors, etc) it may be disabled via: '-noscr'
31/07/2011 17:29:07 Also see the -help entry for tuning parameters.
31/07/2011 17:29:07 You can press 3 Alt_L's (Left "Alt" key) in a row to
31/07/2011 17:29:07 repaint the screen, also see the -fixscreen option for
31/07/2011 17:29:07 periodic repaints.
31/07/2011 17:29:07
31/07/2011 17:29:07 Client Side Caching: -ncache mode is in effect to provide
31/07/2011 17:29:07 client-side pixel data caching. This speeds up
31/07/2011 17:29:07 iconifying/deiconifying windows, moving and raising
31/07/2011 17:29:07 windows, and reposting menus. In the simple CopyRect
31/07/2011 17:29:07 encoding scheme used (no compression) a huge amount
31/07/2011 17:29:07 of extra memory (20-100MB) is used on both the server and
31/07/2011 17:29:07 client sides. This mode works with any VNC viewer.
31/07/2011 17:29:07 However, in most you can actually see the cached pixel
31/07/2011 17:29:07 data by scrolling down, so you need to re-adjust its size.
31/07/2011 17:29:07 See http://www.karlrunge.com/x11vnc/faq.html#faq-client-caching.
31/07/2011 17:29:07 If this mode yields undesired behavior (poor response,
31/07/2011 17:29:07 painting errors, etc) it may be disabled via: '-ncache 0'
31/07/2011 17:29:07 You can press 3 Alt_L's (Left "Alt" key) in a row to
31/07/2011 17:29:07 repaint the screen, also see the -fixscreen option for
31/07/2011 17:29:07 periodic repaints.
31/07/2011 17:29:07
31/07/2011 17:29:07 XKEYBOARD: number of keysyms per keycode 6 is greater
31/07/2011 17:29:07 than 4 and 2 keysyms are mapped above 4.
31/07/2011 17:29:07 Automatically switching to -xkb mode.
31/07/2011 17:29:07 If this makes the key mapping worse you can
31/07/2011 17:29:07 disable it with the "-noxkb" option.
31/07/2011 17:29:07 Also, remember "-remap DEAD" for accenting characters.
31/07/2011 17:29:07
31/07/2011 17:29:07 X FBPM extension not supported.
31/07/2011 17:29:07 X display is capable of DPMS.

Re: update to gnome 3 = frozen desktop with nvidia [solved]

FATAL: Module nouveau not found.

What config files are you using? Does your custom kernel have nouveau?

The log is talking something about x11vnc too.

Re: update to gnome 3 = frozen desktop with nvidia [solved]

The previous post was without an xorg.conf. I am using the stock Nvidia 275.21 driver, no nouveau. The first post shows the X output using the original config I used on the pre-pacman xorg/gnome setup. I am using x11vnc for remote desktop through xrdp. Here it is without xvnc and back to the old config. I also don't understand all the refrences to /root/ when I a, logged  in as a user.

Re: update to gnome 3 = frozen desktop with nvidia [solved]

Yes, I know the previous one was w/o xorg.conf, as it only said

(==) Using config directory: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d"

instead of

(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
(==) Using config directory: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d"

I was curious what special sauce do you have in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d - if any.

The last log talks about VirtualBox

Failed to connect to the VirtualBox kernel service

I have no idea wha''s going on, sorry.

Re: update to gnome 3 = frozen desktop with nvidia [solved]

Understand, have the following files in the xorg.conf.d
10-evdev.conf  10-quirks.conf  10-synaptics.conf  50-fpit.conf  50-joystick.conf  50-vboxmouse.conf  50-vmmouse.conf
I haven't reinstalled vbox since recompiling the kernel on the new gcc, thats that error.

Re: update to gnome 3 = frozen desktop with nvidia [solved]

New development... Swapped out the 7300 with a X1650 ati, and results are different not necessarily better. I get fallback mode with gnome, and I get kde to load 100%. So I think it was driver related. I think I'll keep the ati in for a while. Any suggestions to fix the fallback mode, and I still have no keyboard/mouse when running kde (works fine with icewm)?

Re: update to gnome 3 = frozen desktop with nvidia [solved]

So I have went back to the factory nvidia drivers and upgraded to kernel 3.0 from pacman and still issues getting either KDE or GNOME to startup normally. I get a background at least with GNOME, but KDE stays frozen at the startup screen. At a loss... maybe I just need to live with ICEWM.

Done. Next time, for such issues, please do not use posts to call on the Moderators' attention. Use the report button which is more certain to be noticed quickly.

Re: update to gnome 3 = frozen desktop with nvidia [solved]

Anyone have any suggestions on where to go next? If I were to remove Xorg completely and reinstall what would be left over config wise that would need to be removed in order to do a "fresh install"
Thanks
