I have an 8800GT with the 280.13 driver, KDE 4.7 + compositing.
Anything that starts using VDPAU freezes X with 100% usage, and I can't do anything. From mplayer/smpalyer to flash, if it uses vdpau everything freezes up. I am not sure what change could of caused this, because I had not used my desktop for a long time, and I upgraded everything the other day- but this didn't use to happen.

Just a thought, but is it possible that the nvidia driver (which comes with the static vdpau library I think) and the X server version are now out of sync and causing the lockups?

Justa a few short remarks / questions:
- Did VDPAU work before ?
- What version of the 8800GT do you have (how much memory) ?
- How does the output of vdpauinfo look like ?
Also check dmesg output plus Xorg.log for error messages in regard to vdpau.

For me 280.13 with xorg-server>=11 (using ignoreabi) causes even graphical corruption on qt widgets.
Help me to improve ssh-rdp !

Which could leave to downgrade either xorg or the nividia driver as option ?!?

Exactly, as far as i know, it is a known issue to nvidia devs; they are working on a new release.

vdpau randomly works and then doesn't work. Earlier today it was working fine. Then I locked my computer and left for a hour. After returning now, anything that uses VDPAU freezes up X. If I reboot, it works fine again (just restarting X doesn't fix it, it still freezes, but also kwin gets stuck at 100% CPU)
