Hit the power button once - fans go on, but no POST. Fans don't turn off if you hit the power button again.
Hit the interrupt switch, turn it back on, hit the power button again - fans go on for a second when you hit the power button, then die. Holding the power button down does not keep the fans on.
Unplug, replug, hit the power button... The process repeats itself. The machine will not boot, and does not produce any beep error codes. Monitors attached to it receive no signal.
I tried clearing the BIOS and replacing the BIOS battery; no luck. I tested it with different RAM configurations; no luck.
Until recently this thing worked fine. Then it started complaining about having gone into thermal shutdown after each reboot, when it had clearly been shut down normally. The current non-booting behavior (or rather lack thereof) came on suddenly, without any warning - one day it just randomly stopped booting.
Any guesses what the problem here might be? Could it be the thermal sensors? Is this computer's motherboard done for?

Perhaps a power supply failure of a critical supply source preventing the cmos bios from running.
Remove the PS, connect a jumper from pin 19 (green) to ground (black wired pins, perhaps 20 or 21). This turns on the supply.
The fan in the supply should run and stay running.
Then, using a listing of interface voltage levels for the power supply....probably ATX standard if a desktop...measure the presence of all voltage levels at the interface cable connector. Any missing voltage would indicate a bad power supply.
Alternative, install or connect a temp power supply to the computer with another supply.

Prediction...This year will be a very odd year!

Ah thanks, that would make sense. I'll see if I can find another P4-compatible power supply; having a backup wouldn't hurt anyway.

Well it turns out to have been the CPU... I think. I reseated the CPU and applied new thermal compound, and it worked...
And then it went into thermal shutdown while I was using it, and now refuses to boot, pretty much exactly as before.
Thoughts?

1 of the 10 caps are bad or leaking beside the cpu heatsink . I would bet on it .

Check the fan speed, probably should be near 2800, if less than 2000, replace the fan.

Can't check the fan speed, it doesn't even let me get into the BIOS.
Re bad caps - I wouldn't be surprised, I've seen reports of the D865GLC having that issue. If that turns out to be the problem, would it be worth it to get the caps replaced, or would I be better off finding another P4 compatible motherboard?

If the caps are bad, how many other components have been corroded by the acid in the leaking caps, is what I'd be asking myself. I hate to say it but, personally, I'd just get a new motherboard. My only experience with bad caps resulted the surgery & repair of a computer with a new mobo.

Hmm, the three black and gold capacitors near the CPU socket are bulging - and [edit] they're Nichicons. [/edit] sliposk, I think you got it in one.
Guess I'll salvage what I can and get rid of the mobo.
Edit: None of the capacitors appear to be leaking yet, so I'm going to try to replace them.

I just replaced caps on 2 d865glc and 1 d875pbz . All three work great now . Good Luck .

Update - I replaced all (5) obviously bad caps. Unfortunately the machine is still basically doing what it did before - powering on but not POSTing. The motherboard LED even lights up green, but it never sends a signal to the monitor.
Any last ideas before I start cannibalizing it?
