Config-files' update merging

Sorry if it's not the place.

What about keeping a filetree with "default" config-files, (e.g. in /var/pacman/etc/)?

So, while updating package we can make a diff and put it in e.g. /var/pacman/etc-merge, and then replace the file in /var/pacman/etc. Then user can look what have changed and apply this changes to his /etc(and then deleti the diff). It is possible now to do something like that manually, but maybe there is already some solutions? Idea is simple, but I don't know where to start.

And sorry for my english.
