[PPC] iBook G4 install issues

Long time Arch user, first time messing with Arch PPC. I installed Arch PPC last week with no issue. I went to reinstall it, I make it to step 4, Install Kernel and it fails. It downloads the packages an says: Failed to install the Linux kernel package. tty5 says everything is fine. If I go back to step 3 and check /etc/mkinitcpio.conf it's empty. smile I should have left the install alone. Any suggestions?

Re: [PPC] iBook G4 install issues

If I remember rightly that file was empty when I'm asked to edit it. I would redownload the kernel and try again. Installation is quite straightforward.

Re: [PPC] iBook G4 install issues

I've tried redownloading multiple times with no luck. I did find an alpha version iso and am trying that as we speak.

Re: [PPC] iBook G4 install issues

I'm having the same problem with an imac g3, and I'm trying to figure out how to fix this issue.
Everything installs fine except for the kernel, even yaboot installs. There are two kernel install options and
I tried them both. Any help would be appriciated.

The new iso did no good, still failing on kernel install.

Re: [PPC] iBook G4 install issues

They are all net installs if I am not mistaken, which means that all packages are downloaded when you install. If that is so using a different iso would make no difference. I would select a different repo for example (can't remember if this is possible but you should be able to edit pacman.conf and mirrorlist), or download the kernel package beforehand, or use the testing repo (I am fully upgraded to testing with no problems).

Re: [PPC] iBook G4 install issues

Thank you. I never thought about it being a netinstall. I will try using the testing repo and report back.

Re: [PPC] iBook G4 install issues

So I chrooted into the os and manualy installed the kernel packages and get the following error.

resolving dependencies...
looking for inter-conflicts...
:: lvm2 and mkinitcpio are in conflict (mkinitcpio<0.7). Remove mkinitcpio? [y/N]

I said yes to the message and followed the rest of the install. Works like a charm!

Re: [PPC] iBook G4 install issues

That's weird. Surely you need mkinitcpio to build your initramfs. Well you can always install it later. I think the option I had was to remove lvm2, which I did. Anyway congrats. You should mark this solved.

Re: [PPC] iBook G4 install issues

First time Arch user, Installing Arch PPC on a Mac Mini G4 - running into this problem now. When running "Install Kernel" tty5 says it downloads everything but fails to install - same as OP says in the first post.

Might try looking into the repo.

Failing that, I'll try chroot and see how that goes (haven't done it properly before though).
