I want to load archlinux linux completely from RAM.

I want to run archlinux as a gateway router device in my office. Other than the packages needed for acting as a router, I need squid and ntop. Can any one please help me to create such a custom OS to work as a router. There is no hard disk in the proposed system, so I want to run completely from RAM. I am aware about data persistence.

Not sure if Arch is best fitted for this job, have you tried e.g. TinyCore or distros aimed specifically at routers?

The wiki has articles how to create your custom Arch-based system.

Re: I want to load archlinux linux completely from RAM.

Perhaps CTKArchLive will fill your needs since it can be run completely in ram.

I use Compact Flash for the install vehicle and the OS has cp2ram provided in the boot sequence.

Have't any idea how the system would run as a router.

The flash device is disconnected when cp2ram is utilized.  No hard drives involved.

The system downloads at around 550 mb and dd command converts the .iso to the flash drive.  CD or DVD can also be used for install.

My system using a Compact Flash device runs at 45MB.sec read speed in hdparm.  It isn't involved after initial install via cp2ram.

The installed programs are listed on the CTK web site and upgrades and persistence or both provided.  Using isomaster allows modifying the .iso install via CD/DVD but not flash.

Thus with isomaster you could devise the system to meet your router needs.  Perhaps also by other means, create a flashcompatible install if that is more to your liking.

The system uses aufs for overlays and an addon program for upgrading which utilizes a separate partition to load the addons.  These also install to ram if cp2ram is selected.

Basically, the system runs in ram without cp2ram but cp2ram makes it completely independent and the install device is free to be used for entries.

My system has an adapter which permits operation from sataII port via Compact Flash UDMA IDE compatible and runs as a block device.

You may find the system to your liking and be the first to use it as a ram router!

EDIT:  Your title says : I want to load archlinux linux completely from RAM.  But you say :run from ram in your posting.  Each is a different process.....................
