ext2/3 as ext4

Hi all,
I am trying to compile a Kernel to rectify some USB issues with my computer. When I ran make localmodconfig I was asked if I would like to use ext2/3 as ext4. Is this a correct thing to do? My file systems are ext4 at the moment.

I know this is a newbie question, but I have never compiled a Kernel before.

Thanks.

Re: ext2/3 as ext4

Yes.  The ext4 driver can mount both -2 and -3 in backwards compatibility mode.

Re: ext2/3 as ext4

Thankyou, Kernel is compiling now.

So to clarify, there will be no problems when I connect my ext3 external HDD?

Thanks.

I'd never say this, but yes, there should be no problems. I have an ext3 partition mounted as ext4, no problems for 5 months now, also my external usb drive has ext3 which I mount as ext4.
