I have a thinkpad T43 (at least I think that's what it is, it doesn't really say anywhere on the body) with an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG wireless card in it.
When I set up a netcfg profile as follows I can't connect:
CONNECTION='wireless'
INTERFACE='eth1'
SECURITY='wep'
ESSID='UVEE2'
KEY='...'
IP='dhcp'
I get the following error if I do "netcfg -u main"
nl80211: Driver does not support authentication/association or connect commands
Connecting manually works fine. Kernel driver and module as reported by lspci -k are ipw2200. Any tips?

Is there a specific reason you don't want to use networkmanager or wicd? I tried netcfg a while back and had problems with it also. I've avoided it since wicd works well enough and networkmanager has improved a lot.

It seems likely that your Intel wifi chip needs firmware. Did you check the wiki for that kind of thing? And fwiw, I'm not a fan of networkmanager but I do see its appeal.
