The Official Unofficial 'Arch is Best' Thread

(Arch is the best distro ever...)

...at least for me. i know that one should not make claims that this or that distro is the best os.  my past 2,5 years have been a constant distro hopping. i've tried tons of distros, the only one that comes close to arch is gentoo, but my thinkpad is not that powerful (866mhz/256 mb ram) to wait for software to compile.

if there wasn't arch, i'd probably buy a mac. this is my third time with arch, but i don't think i'm going anywhere.

so please keep up the good work, i wish that the archlinux project goes on as long as possible (forever?  wink )

probably irrelevant, just wanted to get this off my heart. thanks for reading[/b]

Re: The Official Unofficial 'Arch is Best' Thread

I dont know if any distro can be the "ultimate distro". I certainly like arch, otherwise I wouldn't be here..using it.
But I think saying it solves all problems for all people (which is implied by the word "ultimate"), is being a bit disengenuous..

Re: The Official Unofficial 'Arch is Best' Thread

Arch needs a little more polishing(pacman errors on upgrading) and stop its "let's put things in thousands of  different repos(AUR unsupported/community, TURs, current, extra, testing, unstable and never integrate OFFICIALLY things waited for months". (Yes I'm exaggerating)

For example, azureus is waiting to be in the official repos, at least in community...

What I also do not understand, is why devs have not yet built a structure so that devs can massively join the distro...

Apart from that, sure it is one of the most impressive distro I've seen so far, next only to Ubuntu.

I'm now trying(and really like) Sarge and I'm waiting for a Arch 1.0 release !!!

i don't say that. i say that it solves my problems. lightweight, customizable, and not that hard to configure.

i've used debian and co extensively, and pacman beats apt-get imho. eg. recursive removal of packages

I was speaking to the post immediately following your fist post (Cyberton's post). I noticed you qualified your opinion with "at least for me", which is why I didn't say anything about your post.  wink

Re: The Official Unofficial 'Arch is Best' Thread

just to reply to the attacks of the "ultimate" statement I gave...

for me it is ultimate, it solves all my problems, it does exactly what I want, It is fast, it is easy and it is fun...

for me it is the ultimate distribution right now...(for my purpose)
for realworld server usage i would use Slackware...

this was just to clarify big_smile

Go arch go!

Re: The Official Unofficial 'Arch is Best' Thread

It was quite a while ago when I used FreeBSD and I didn't know much about the BSD world and really didn't know anything about the other BSD's. I think if I were to go back to BSD I'd go with OpenBSD.

Yeah, I've tried several of the BSDs over the years (the last of which was just a few weeks ago), but didn't care much for them and couldn't wait to get back to Linux.   8)

Re: The Official Unofficial 'Arch is Best' Thread

Is there a specific reason a topic such as this can stay open and other more flamable topics get locked? IMO they are the same damn thing as <--insert distro here--> v. Arch.

Yes there is, this person justifies his comment.

...at least for me.

and is saying that he is happy that he has found the right distro for himself.

nobody's hurt anybody yet, and it doesnt look like anyone's going to, so I think it would be safe to let this thread die a natural death.

This is true. Personally, I would like to delete the thread, but I could make it a sticky instead and then I would be free tolock anything else without my conscience bothering me. Yes, I think I will do this.

Re: The Official Unofficial 'Arch is Best' Thread

I've tryed out Red Hat (yes when it was still RH), Mandrake (yes when it was still Mandrake.. *sigh*), Fedora Core, Ubuntu, SuSE, Slackware, Knoppix (doesnt really count, does it?) and Arch.

And i can say that Arch is the only distro that i really liked, and the perfect distro for me. And I'm staying with it. Now, when i get my new hdd I'm going to go into windows and delete one by one file in C:WindowsSystem32. Till i screw something up, mwahaha!  wink
