[Solved Kinda] COD Black Ops in Wine

I've tried so many things in the past few days that I couldn't possibly recall them all.

Although I've had some successes along the way, I clearly just don't understand wine and/or linux sound systems well enough to get this working.

I've read the wine section of the wiki.  I've googled.  I've read hundreds of postings at various forums.  I have installed and reinstalled the game under PON, vanilla Wine, and Crossover numerous times, blowing away old settings most of the time to be sure I start fresh.

In the end here is what I have achieved --

In all scenarios I am forced to install steam.  (I'm using a digital download version if that matters.)  I don't necessarily have a problem with that, but it may be a factor.

1) In vanilla Wine or using wine-multimedia from AUR, I can get the game to install.  I get sound in cutscenes, but I have no sound in menus or in-game.  Gameplay is mostly good, but has moments of choppiness that I suspect are NOT related to the capabilities of my graphics hardware (more on that in a sec).  I could live with the bits of choppiness ifI could get audio.

2) PlayOnLinux always fails with "Incomplete Installation (2)" from Steam after it appears to have fully installed the game.  I'm told that on trick to avoiding this is to make sure steam is installed in C:\Steam instead of letting it go into Program Files or some other subdirectory.  However I haven't successfully achieved getting Steam to be installed there under PON yet.  (I think.)  Supposedly this game works great with whatever configs PON applies if you can get it installed.

3) Crossover Games gets me *flawless* smooth graphical playback, but I have no sound at any time.

I've blindly followed more than a few diagnostic steps and "try this, try that, try this, try that" suggestions that I have seen posted in other threads on various forums, but so far nothing has worked.

Does anyone have first hand experience with this game under Wine in Arch and/or suggestions for a really solid troubleshooting methodology?

TIA.

Edit:  It's occurred to me that was a little bit light on details.

All related packages are up to date.
I'm running a GTX460M with Nvidia closed drivers
lspci lists my sound device as nVidia Corporation GF106 High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1)
I don't recall installing pulse audio, but it seems to show as a running process.  (As noted, I'm pretty ignorant about the nuts and bolts of Linux sound)

Re: [Solved Kinda] COD Black Ops in Wine

Ah sorry.  I knew I'd get it working as soon as I posted.

For anyone else who finds this thread -- I did another crossover installation, but this time instead of telling crossover to run the installer for the game, I did these things differently:

Told Crossover to install Steam
Made sure Steam was installed to C:\Steam (not sure that's necessary, but was one of the most common recommendations I'd found)
Allowed Steam to install the game (I did this under PON and vanilla Wine and wine-multimedia previously, with the results as noted in the first post)
Now I have great gameplay and functioning sound everywhere.

I really didn't want to buy Crossover, but between the sound and the smooth gameplay, I don't think I was going to get this working any other way.  All this was under the demo, but they now have my $$...
