I'm planning to buy a Wi-Fi USB adapter that I would like to use with linux ( archlinux and ubuntu mainly )
I have one now but it doesn't work, can't find any answers to why and it's been 9 months
so I would like to know what you guys use so I know for sure it works.
I want it to be
- 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n
- 2.4 and 5 ghz
- dual band supported
thanks

I use a D-Link DWA-160 Xtreme N Dual band adapter. It works very well over-all, though with the previous ISO (2010 ver) I had some small issues with the lack of firmware. You'll need firmware to run this little usb gadget but as of 6 months ago or so, the firmware is now included within the mainline kernel releases IIRC.

you just plug it in and bam it works when using tools like NetworkManager or you manually configure it? :p

I use NETGEAR WG111US Wireless G Usb Adapter, and it works perfectly. Plug it in and it's good to go. No manual configuration or extra firmware installation.

Education is favorable to liberty. Freedom can exist only in a society of knowledge. Without learning, men are incapable of knowing their rights, and where learning is confined to a few people, liberty can be neither equal nor universal.

Just about any Atheros USB adapter should do the trick.

I am in agreement with .:B:. on this one. The only usb nic's I've had work out of the box (including my current D-Link usb) use either an Atheros chipset or a RA-Link chip. I strongly advise you to avoid any nic that relies on Broadcom's chips. Those things, despite the recent open-sourcing of their drivers, I've found a royal PITA to get working even with Ndiswrapper.
TLDR: my current usb NIC WOOTB.

thanks .:B:. and MoonSwan
I looked around but could only find 2.4ghz
I'm in the UK... maybe you guys could direct me?

Try TP-Link. Good chance they have some, but I don't think you'll find a lot of 5 GHz USB adapters.

thats the one I was looking at... only saw 2.4ghz
only 5ghz I could find was a d-link ( second poster ) might just go for that... abit pricey though

5 GHz costs a bit more, I guess that's still how it is nowadays .

Ya it's a bit pricier here too but as I said, I've had zero issues with it apart from the original firmware instance. Also, I forgot to mention this, but you can calibrate/set it with a little button on the front and a PIN code for your router (if the router supports PIN setting that is). I have never tried to use that method so I can't say it works or doesn't. If you try it please post back if this is the nic you get for your own compy.
Good luck
Edit: I tried to find my usb nic on the TP-Link website and failed miserably. So I got a URL for my nic directly from D-Link to make sure we are thinking of the same little usb dongle. See below:
