Debating on whether to use xcompmgr or not. It makes the floating windows look really nice but the tiled ones look kinda bad...

Well mainly because of how tiling works. In dwm it's basically like 3 windows per tag before it starts to get unusable (because the default tiling is one big left, 3 vertical). In i3, you can make it however you want. If I make 2 windows half and half, and I then make a veritcal OR horizonal  new window under any window I choose. And under that, I can make any vertical or horizontal window (and so on, but it will be unusable lol). You can also do tabbed windows which is really nice if you don't want to see a window too much but you have to keep it open or something. You can increase the width/height of any window (in dwm you could [by default I think] only increase the width of a window. I'm fairly new to tiling WMs this stuff but I like i3 a whole lot better. smile

Oh and built in tray support is nice (some people don't need it, but I like it).

Since uselessgap produces double gaps, I hacked up several patches and now I have even gaps in all layouts.

Wow I never knew you could do that with dwm. Nice!

It's just another layout, and a not-so-useful one tongue

As to your description of i3 v.s. dwm, the difference here is essentially manual v.s. dynamic tiling. Manual tiling provides finer control, while dynamic tiling is more automatic with several predefined layouts that you can switch between. If you want to give dwm another try, look around the dwm patches section at suckless.org for some more layouts, or write your own if you like.

Dwm was my first tilling WM (well I tried xmonad for like 2 hours but removed it tongue). I really liked it (still my 2nd fav wm). I used it for like 2 months. But the thing is, I rather have manual tiling. In dwm I had like 3 windows per workspace (at the max) even on my 1366x768 laptop resolution (I think that's decent for a laptop). I rather have a manual tiling window manager than a dynamic one with lots of patches. tongue But if I ever want dynamic tiling, I'll be sure to use dwm. Thanks though. smile

It's Consolas 9, a MS font unfortunately. Very similar free alternative to it is Bitstream Vera Sans Mono 8.
