Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Gyday all from Down Under (Australia),

I have been using Linux for many many uses on my server and in my HTPC, I have previously dabbled with Linux on the desktop but never really stuck with it. I have now got Arch installed as that is the base for my HTPC (LinHES) and I thought I would keep it all in the family.

I have found that the doco is a little confusing at times as there is no step by step but I will work it out I suppose. I have gotten this far whereby I have Arch installed and I am currently running Enlightenment however that could change.

Looking forward to having a great old play with Arch and see if I can convert from "The Big Bad W" as someone else put it to Arch on a full time basis.

Thanks

Girkers

Hi all!

Why do people say ubuntu is so easy to use? It's the third time I try to install it (the first two times, a few years ago, I failed and installed Slackware) and I failed again - more or less. So happy ArchLinux worked out better. And it's SO much faster than win7!

Hi everyone !

im pavitran from Malaysia. Been a linux user off n on since 2001. The whole installation of Arch thought me more of linux since the previous distro that i was using Ubuntu had everything preinstalled and preconfigured. Planning to stick around with Arch. love at the first sight i would say smile
Currently on a Gnome 3 setup with linux-ck kernel patchset.. Everything is blazing around fast !

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi folks,

it's Frank, a student from Germany! I first tried Linux in 2004 when I bought (yes, I literally BOUGHT) SuSE 9.2. But I got pretty frustrated with it soon because It just had a crappy support for WiFi, which was actually an essential feature. In mid-2006, I tried Ubuntu 6.06, which was pretty cool and since then, I've been using linux on a regular basis on both my desktop and laptop. It even became my main OS like two years ago and if I didn't have an iPhone, I'm pretty sure there would be no need for any other OS on my computers ;-)

I first heard of Arch in some episodes of the German RadioTux podcast as some of the guys producing this podcast are using it. As an "early adopter" I decided to give it a try because Arch is pretty much an easy way to always having the "newest, coolest, hottest shit" installed, to say it with the words of the podcast-guys ;-) And so far, I am really amazed of Arch.

I'm running Arch with KDE 4.7 on my EeePC 1000H and with GNOME 3 on my 7 years old desktop. I'm absolutely impressed by the performance on the EeePC. I had Kubuntu installed before and Arch is really much faster.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

The first time I tried Arch, I royally screwed up my install, got frustrated that it would not work with wireless (eee pc 901...for a while the ralink was a hit or miss), and just put it on hold for a while.

When the 2011.08.19 Install showed up on DistroWatch, I decided to give it another go. I have no idea what I did wrong the first time...but the install was smooth, wireless connected without a problem, and I am up and running. It was a satisfying process to have it work so well. The wiki was a huge help. I cannot wait to see what Arch holds in the future!!

Thanks!
Ben

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello all,

I am new to Arch Linux and fairly new to Linux in general. I realize Arch isn't particularly geared towards people that have such a lack of experience but I am eager to learn and Arch has been the best distro I've found to do just that. I really enjoy the way Arch allows me to see and be involved in what is going on within my system, which is something I feel that other well-meaning distros were leaving me out of through the use of GUI tools. With Arch, I'm finally comprehending what it means to have user ownership. Having my data backed up and learning the fundamentals I need has proven to be a very rewarding and fun experience. I have found my distro at last.

I also don't think I could have picked a better time to begin with Arch than when I did. When I first installed, it was a few weeks before the new release, so I became acquainted with .pacnew files and learned (with some trial and error) how to deal with them the right way.

I foresee lurking for quite some time before I can possibly add to the wealth of knowledge already available, though I hope someday that I can. For the time being, being a sponge is quite enough!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

I've been using Windows for years, but was not happy about it (who is?:-) -
Since I have tried *BSDs and Solaris before, I switched to Mac - from that point on I was feeling like in prison using any Windows-box (no bash, no choice, slow boot, viruses and that sort of stuff...).
Now, since I liked *nix concepts and knew a bit from *BSD (and was a big fan of FOSS for many years), I've dedicated to go ahead and give Linux a try as my only-OS.
From my previous experiences with Ubuntu - I hated it!
Ubuntu just feels to me like Windows in a Linux world, (or a Mac if you like - but I still thing that Mac is WAY better than Windows and I really like some of its concepts).
From what I've tried - Linux was not going on well with my Mac Mini, (only Mint with is Ubuntu pushed further...), so I bought a laptop and pushed Mac to my family.
Now, SuSe, Debian, Slackware, Mandriva, Fedora and so on was not  for me, (but I liked Fedora mostly from all these distros...), so I was starting looking from something a bit different from all these "mainstream" distros.
Gentoo was on my spot, but since the idea of comppile-everything on-the-fly was not for me, I've tried Arch, (the Arch name and logo was already in my memory from somewhere).
I was told that trying Arch as a practical Linux newbie is not a good idea, but since it was looking a bit like BSD I was ignoring all the warnings.
And glad I am I was!
I am not comfortable with many things yet, but I am learning pretty quickly - (I think) and the Arch community is always very helpful, (no matter how stupid my questions are...:-).
Now, Arch is my only OS, (Although I must admit that I had some pause with it and tried Windows again for some experiments I wanted to try...).
Live forever Arch! :-)

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

I just got it going in a VirtualBox guest with Ubuntu 11.04 as host.

I'm running it on an i7 2600K w/ 16GB RAM, and I gotta say I'm impressed...

Good thing Gentoo couldn't resolve it's own KDE dependencies, or I might not be here...

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone,

I've been a Debian/Ubuntu user all this time. Been trying to install Fedora without success (problem with my Nvidia drivers). I thought I try a different tact. Somebody at LinuxCon suggested Arch. There is no problem with Arch and any of my hardware so far.

I love the documentation. I like the AUR. I'm using Arch with GNOME.

Cheers to all.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello Archers,

I've just registered on the forums, but I've been 'lurking' for some time finding loads of great info and answers to questions.

I'm certainly no guru, but I seem to have a knack for anything computer related and have enjoyed learning the ins and outs of my Arch system.  Hopefully I may be able to put some experience to use in contributing to the  forums/community.

It seems there are many experts with various comp. sci. backgrounds in the Arch community - I would not be one of them.  My computer work has generally just been a hobby - but lately I've had a few great opportunities to do some "consulting" type of work based on this hobby.  I love tinkering with code (C mostly) and love wowing people with simple efficient solutions to regular tasks they would do on their computer.

I have yet to really get a grasp on the gnu autotools (autoconf and friends) ... I've tried, but I have yet to find info that is truly introductory to the topic without being so dumbed-down to be useless.  Anyhow, that's a topic for another thread.

I'm glad to be here, and I'm glad arch is here for us (thanks devs).

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

hey everyone.
I'm from new zealand.
been using ubuntu since 6.10, with much distro hopping to try new things. recently built a new computer, and decided to give 11.04 a go. gave up using the unity interface, its just too slow and clunky for me.
so i bit the bullet, and gave arch a go. very very impressed.
its really fast too smile

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi all,
My name is Jack, I am an undergraduate Computer Science student at Goldsmiths, University of London, and have been a Linux enthusiast for a few years now. I started with the more accessible distro's, most notably Ubuntu. However, I do not feel that they enabled me to learn as much as I would have liked. So I looked for another, slightly more "hands dirty" distro, and came across Arch. I love it, although I am still working out some issued with my Laptop installation.

I feel that I will truly learn about Linux (not just use it) if I stick with Arch.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

I have tried several different Linux distros and settled on Arch because its GNU and allows customizing. Then I discovered the Nvidia drivers and utils which really boost my 3d performance. I am using an Asus F5GL notebook. Thanks Arch and Hello Everyone!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone!

My name is Ray and I have been a Linux (Ubuntu) user for a couple years now, and was a little afraid to switch because I thought that Ubuntu had a really strong community for support and questions and I wouldn't really find that elsewhere, but boy was I wrong.  The forums and the wiki for Arch is absolutely incredible.  As someone with only a basic understanding of Linux, the resources available to Arch users is fantastic.

I would like to thank all of the people who came before me and created such strong documentation to guide us newbies.  Hopefully someday I can contribute something meaningful, but for now it's back to learning all the ins and outs of this awesome distro!

See you around!

-Ray

Hello everyone! I'm Eduardo from Dominican Republic.
I have been using linux for a while,  I tried too many distro's and I came to arch just for test, love it, specially the wiki.
I tried gentoo and freebsd so Arch is some 'familiar' to me, and I never seen my computer so fast like now :D
(love pacman and no-so-freaky-longer compilation time :D)
PS:

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Good evening everyone,

My name is Jonathan and I came to Arch from.... Just about all of the distros since I had a distro hopping problem but mainly Crunchbang since I got into Openbox a year or two ago. I have around six years of experience with Linux in general but I got into Arch just around a week or so ago. I absolutely love it and it's simplicity, the documentation and wiki couldn't be more helpful, and the lack of overhead that many of the main distro's have combined with a nice simple Openbox setup mean that my desktop and netbook are faster if not as fast as Windows ( or some of the other distros for that matter ). I also had fun building the desktop and I learned alot on the way (I became a little more proficient with bash scripting if that counts).

With that said, I would like to say hello to the entire community and I hope that I could contribute as much as I can! smile
