MS TTF fonts installed via packages like ttf-vista-fonts and ttf-ms-fonts render correctly, and I have used SegoeUI successfully in the past, so I'm not sure what the deal is.

It may be obvious, but just in case: try running fc-cache -f -v.

Are the permissions on the files correct (644)? I can cause the same problem by making the ttf files readable only by root.
