Good morning everyone
I did a reinstall of Arch on my desktop. It is a dualboot with Win7 but there are no problems with the graphics.
graphic: Nvidia GT240
driver: nouveau (for testing but I want to use the nvidia)
WM: openbox (I tried Gnome 3 and pekwm before)
After the login I can move the cursor but everything else won't do anything. I can switch to tty1 with Ctrl+Alt+F1 and kill X there. Now I do a new login and everything works fine.
When I use the nvidia driver I can login and after I opened 2 or 3 windows X freezes too. After the relogin I have the same problem.

A $HOME/.xession-errors doesn't exist.
I tried the kernel26-lts and nvidia-lts (advice from the german arch forum) but there is the same problem, because I thought linux3.0 is the bad guy.
I hope someone can help.
EDIT: I've installed Ubuntu and openSuse for testing but there is the same problem. Is it possible that my harddrive is damaged?

Hi
I've been having problems with the nvidia-drivers too. You should give nv a try since it always works for me although it is slow.
I experience similar problems as the ones you report, X will work at 100% and it is frozen. I can kill it from an ssh terminal and reboot. The last version that worked for me was 270 but I did tried versions 275 and 280 with little success. You might want to give version 270 a try. Note that this version is incompatible with linux3 so you will also need a kernel26. Version 270 has problems with konsole, so if you use kde4, do not use konsole, repeat, do not use konsole or you will end up with a frozen X. I'm very disappointed at the nvidia people who can't figure this out yet.
hope this helps
this is my /etc/pacman.conf where you can see what packages I have frozen:
# The upgrade that was supposed to solve the konsole crash 270-275 now freezes the
# system with a different kind of crash. I saved the Xorg log in /root
#IgnorePkg = nvidia nvidia-utils lib32-nvidia-utils kernel26
# New version that is supposed to fix a number of glx related crashes.
# Version 280 still crashes with X running at 100. I tried:
# - disabling fancy stuff in KDE
# - passed RenderAccel 0
# - tried with and without EDID
# Downgrading was complicated because:
# - kernel26 is now linux3 and is incompatible with old nvidia-270. So kernel was downgraded
# - opencl-nvidia package is new and couldn't be removed before nvidia-utils-280.
# - I forced the upgrade(downgrade) to 270 despite the file complains and then removed opencl-nvidia
# - I'm not sure there are other packages in conflict.
IgnorePkg = nvidia nvidia-utils lib32-nvidia-utils kernel26
I wonder how long I will be able to keep this up before my system breaks.
cheers

Thanks
I will try it, but X isn't runnig at 100%. CPU/RAM are used to ~10%. With the 275 I had no problems, it is the first time that there are problems like this. At the moment I use the nouveau with the same problem.
I test my harddisk, maybe is there something wrong with it.

Ok, I tested my harddisk but this App form Seagate means there are no probs with the harddisk.
I've tested what riczan told me, but without success.
Any ideas? I don't want to use Win only for games and nothing else.
