Re: System Sometimes Hangs @ "Power Off" While Halting

After updating today to 2.6.39-1 I find my acer revo 3610 (intel atom 330 x86_64) sometimes hangs during reboot just after the switch to runlevel 6.

I am not using laptop mode and I don't have acpid running (so far as I know).

Is this the same problem as being discussed here and if yes can anyone suggest a way forward?

I think this only affects reboot as hibernate and shutdown seem to work fine.

"Fixed" on a Dell Latitude e6520 by adding "rmmod e1000e" to "/etc/rc.local.shutdown".

Workaround working on Thinkpad T410s, kernel 2.6.39 and laptop-mode-tools enabled.

Re: System Sometimes Hangs @ "Power Off" While Halting

My Lenovo X60 always hangs at "power off". This has been true for months, I can't recall exactly which update I first noticed it, but no update since has fixed it. Removing the laptop-mode daemon also does not fix it.

pm-suspend works as expected, but shutdown seems to do everything except turn off the power.

does your network adapter uses the e1000e module? if so, have you tried removing that module before shutdown to see if that temporarily solves the problem?

before you shutdown try:

rmmod e1000e

as root and see if that makes any difference.

Removing e1000e did solve the problem. I've added that to /etc/rc.local.shutdown. Thanks very much!

Nice, please do me a favor now and report the issue and the "fix" upstream. Thanks.

Re: System Sometimes Hangs @ "Power Off" While Halting

Is this issue still present in the latest kernel from core?
Non of the above workarounds had worked for me but after reading this post and this article, I added the following to the kernel command line and the problem no longer appears.

pcie_aspm=force

I'm on a Thinkpad x301 running kernel26 2.6.39.3-1 from core.

Yes, the problem is still present with the latest kernel from core. I reproduced it now by removing the e1000e module from the blacklist. Adding "pcie_aspm=force" didn't work for me. The only solution I found is blacklisting e1000e.

Maybe you want to report your workaround upstream also?

Re: System Sometimes Hangs @ "Power Off" While Halting

Dear all,

I had already posted my worry in a Laptop Issues thread . It passed unanswered, so I guess it's more relevant here. If I am breaking the netiquette by restating my problem, please disregard this message and accept my apologies:

I would like to ask you for help with a weird piece of behaviour of my arch box (now 3.0, but it was the same with older kernels), a Toshiba Satellite U500:

* Shutdown works OK when on A/C, but, when on battery, the computer ends up with fans on and the On button light on. In this state it is totally unresponsive -- it looks much as it does when it fails to suspend.

* But, on battery (and A/C too), it reboots perfectly well. So I've resorted to rebooting when I want to shutdown on battery, and then
plugging it off once it gets to the bios screen.

I'm sure these will be tell-tale symptoms to more enlightened arch users. For my part, I am totally clueless. I would have suspected an
acpid problem, but I have no shutdown event or action enabled. I don't see anything interesting in the logs either. Although my computer is now arch only, I've had several Ubuntus, Mints and Fedoras installed, and Windows 7 too. This issue has only appeared on arch.

Any piece of advise will be very welcome.

Cheers,
Manolo

What Ethernet chipset does your laptop have? Does it use the e1000e module? If so try this as root:

rmmod e1000e

Then shutdown, and see if that makes the problem go away.

I have the same problem, I think, but none of the solutions offered have made a difference. I run an Acer Aspire One, with a network chip using the ath5k module. Unloading this module before shutting down doesn't help, however. The e1000e module doesn't run in the first place.

You should report this issue to bugzilla.kernel.org when kernel.org is back. Obviously the "rmmod e1000e" is just a workaround to this problem, there seems to be a more deeper issue. I hope we can find a way to trace the root of the problem and fix it.

I had a similar problem on my Asus U41SV and rmmod-ing the ehci_hcd module did the trick for me.

Re: System Sometimes Hangs @ "Power Off" While Halting

I've the same problem. Asus eeepc S101. Reboot is OK. shutdown will delay more then 20 seconds.

The following methods not work. (put in /etc/shutdown)
1. I don't have e1000, so don't require to remove it. (I've ath9k)
2. rmmod acpi_hcd # it caused hang.
3. disable cpufreq
4. disable laptop-mode

I added strace on shutdown line in /etc/rc.shutdown. Yes, it halt on this command.

Running 4 ArchLinux including sh4twbox,server,notebook,desktop. my AUR packages, old project Arch on colinux,

Re: System Sometimes Hangs @ "Power Off" While Halting

Just FYI:

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/ is back.

Also, there seems to be two new bug reports about the issue with shutdown and e1000e. According to Zhang Rui from Intel, the issue is caused by the e1000e runtime suspend. The issue also seems to be related to WOL (Wake-on-LAN).

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=36132
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=d … p_id=42302

The original bug report that I've opened (Bug 33872) is now closed, since it ended up being a duplicate of Bug 36132, so all discussion should happen on Bug 36132 now.

Those people having issues with shutdown and other modules, please file separate bug reports.

Thanks.

Re: System Sometimes Hangs @ "Power Off" While Halting

just for the sake of completeness: I had the same issue with the latest kernel 3.2.5-1 on Thinkpad T510. Adding rmmod e1000e to rc.local.shutdown solved the problem. thanks guys. :-D

Re: System Sometimes Hangs @ "Power Off" While Halting

Hello,

I'm happy to report that Linux 3.3.1 finally solved this problem for me (apparently). No workarounds needed anymore.

What I did is this: make sure e1000e is loaded and NOT blacklisted, set up laptop-mode in DAEMONS, try to reproduce.

The result? Well, it shut down cleanly every time I've tried to shutdown, so apparently this is now fixed for those with e1000e and this problem.

For all those people with e1000e: please remove all your workarounds and try to reproduce this issue with the latest kernel, and post your results to this thread: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=36132

I'm really happy that this is now fixed (at least it doesn't hang for me anymore).

If you are having issues with other modules, please file separate bug reports to https://bugzilla.kernel.org/

Thanks.

Re: System Sometimes Hangs @ "Power Off" While Halting

BTW, you don't even need to install laptop-mode-tools to reproduce this issue, you can just as well do:

for i in /sys/bus/pci/devices/*/power/control; do echo "auto" > "$i"; done

as root and then shutdown.

I found that laptop-mode sets "auto" to all those /sys entries and then this issue is triggered, so same thing.

Re: System Sometimes Hangs @ "Power Off" While Halting

Great news everyone, Zhang Rui from Intel just closed the issue with "CLOSED CODE_FIX".

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=36132

So this issue is now officially fixed. big_smile

Thanks.
