hdparm run, now my hd is dead

I was massing around with optimizing my system, hdparm was something I was playing with. Last thing I remember doing is a -X 66 i think. Long story short, now one of my harddisks is broken. I don't have a /dev/hde anymore.

Is there any thing  I can do to help get it back, or save my data?

Re: hdparm run, now my hd is dead

hdparm settings are not saved between boots, so if an invalid setting is preventing it from working, it should revert to working when the system is rebooted. the drive could have just died.

try the normal procedure: first, reboot; second, try it in another machine. who made that particular drive? they may have tools on their website that can analyse the drive and see if it has any problems.

Re: hdparm run, now my hd is dead

OK, so I took it off my Promise Ultra66 card and put into directly into the MB. Now it seems fine. I paniced. I knew could have been pushing the line using hdparm like I was and didn't respect it.

I have yet to see any great easy to understand conclusive information on hdparm. Please point me to some of you know of any.

i always make small, single setting changes and benchmark with -tT before trying something else. the -X settings along with the power management settings are tricky and best left alone unless you know exactly what settings your controller and drive support.
