Pacman is only there to assist you with your packages. There's nothing wrong with installing manually. And he gave you everything needed to make a PKGBUILD for what he's doing, so you could do it that way if you wanted.

It's wrong, that's why package managers exist. It's not for assisting, it's essential and it should not be overriden but only in very-very rare cases.

And do you know how many linux distros DONT have package managers? lol. It isn't wrong. I do everything manually on my Gentoo box, as well as on Fedora. And it hasn't done me any wrong for the past 6 years. It's just another way to do things, just because it isn't your way, doesn't make it wrong. Just saying. That's the beauty of linux.

Question - why do the mate menus conflict with GNOME's menus? Shouldn't they be fixed so that they don't conflict?

Hi All,

I have created a mirror site for mate.

In pacman.conf please add the following two lines

[mate]
Server = http://germ.winpe.com/archlinux/mate/$arch

This is a reasonably fast server and will hopefully spread the load a bit.

I will check it daily for any updates/changes.

Could I be emailed if there are updates or changes? This would help me keep it up to date.

I have had to copy all those files from the matsusoft.co.ar server using aria, the site is so slow and unreliable, it has taken hours copying them. Now I have all the files I will just keep an eye out on the matsusoft server for any modified files and keep updating them manually for the time being. I have the time to do this daily so no problem for now.
When the amount of packages grows a lot more then some automation like rsync will be called for.

I will have a look at adding this server to the "Unofficial_User_Repositories" as you suggest, didn't even know about them until you suggested it.

Tal parece que es necesario revisar cada uno de los paquetes para agregar !libtools y volver a compilar todos los paquetes de nuevo en el repositorio. Si alguien se aventura en esto, yo no me enojo.

Now that I actually get around to using some of these packages for mate, I now agree that maintaining the old packages is better than porting to GTK 3, short-term. I had forgotten how even things like nautilus had been drastically changed. :V

EDIT: libmateweather still seems to have some messages with nautilus in them. here's a patch

All disk mounting or is it anything specific like NTFS? Also, have you installed HAL?

* Yes I'm having this problem with all disk mounting. HAL it's already installed (and already added to rc.conf). I can mount disks only when I start session as root (I refer to disks mount with the Places menu, with a single click). I've add my user to ALL the groups (I see the groups with # cat /etc/group |cut -d: -f1): No luck.

* Also when I use mate-display-manager, the shutdown option in the System menu (and the shutdown applet) doesn't show. Another issue is that I have to change the keyboard layout on every session start because mate-display-manager doesn't save my preferences.

I am sure there must be some graphic artists out there that can produce a good looking logo for Mate.

To give people a push I decided to produce a logo myself. My artistic abilities are just about zero as my logo proves, even this is in reality the work of "The Gimp". I am sure this needs to be an SVG image really.
Please don't let my pathetic attempt end up as the official Mate logo.

Stealthy, your wallpaper isn't very good as a wallpaper, but is an awesome base for MATE logo. Just replace "X"-type net with "M"-type net, something like the top of this:

By the way, maybe, I'm wrong, but you'd better contributed to XFCE or LXDE, which only lack good third-party plugins and apps, with the first doing the same that base GNOME2 did taking less resources and the second being simple and modular.

Many people in Phoronix's forums have been talking about that, mostly saying that this fork is useless, that people should work on making Gnome 3 Fallback Mode as usable as Gnome 2 was.

Pesonally I agree on this, but not completely. Take for example Trinity Desktop Environment. It's good and it works, but almost no one uses it by now. I believe it's used only by old-timers that couldn't get along with KDE4 or other DEs, and sadly I see Mate Desktop Environment with the same future.
It would be great if we could focus our strenghts with Gnome devs and make Fallback Mode great, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't take it into the main package, because that's not what they're aiming for. So in that case, I could only think of releasing a kind of patch to separately add to Gnome 3, or some kind of parallel development of Mate Desktop Environment based on Gnome 3 Fallback Mode.
Though I currently use Xfce with some customization (and I really like it), I think it's pretty far from what Gnome 2 was, and that's not even the point of Mate Desktop Environment. The same goes for LXDE (which is way far behind, though I use it too and I think it's got great potential).

Linux is all about choice, and IMO it's great that you want to keep using Gnome 2 on your favorite distro, that's why I don't completely agree with basing Mate DE on Gnome 3 Fallback Mode. But anyways I do think it would be best to take Fallback Mode and work from there, because it's pretty close to what Gnome 2 was and certainly that's where the future is.
