Error setting value: Failed to contact configuration server;

I input this as I'm trying to tweak my desktop settins:

gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/shell/windows/buttom_layout --type string :minimize,maximize,close

The output was this:

Error setting value: Failed to contact configuration server; the most common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details -  1: Failed to get connection to session: The connection is closed)

I've found nothing via google ......and dbus is in my daemons array........so I'm lost for now!!!

Is there a package I need to install.......or a file that needs editing???

Re: Error setting value: Failed to contact configuration server;

dbus, the daemon, starts the system bus. The error indicates that you're not running a session bus which should be started upon starting X. How are you starting... whatever it is you're running on X.
