Connecting my laptop to my TV in a roundabout way...

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X201 which I'd like to be able to connect to my TV.  It only has a VGA output, but I have a VGA-DVI connector and a DVI to HDMI connector.  I've connected these together, along with an HDMI cable, and connected it up, but can't figure out how to actually get the display on the TV - assuming it's possible using this method.

I tried using xrandr, which says that VGA1 is disconnected.  I've confirmed that the VGA port works properly by connecting it to my desktop monitor using xrandr.

Is this approach possible?  If so, how can I get it to work?

You can't. VGA is analog, but if your TV only has HDMI, you need a digital signal.

OT question: When did VGA disappear from TVs? I bought mine last year and it has VGA input.

Yes, but surely the VGA to DVI adapter would include an analog to digital converter? Otherwise it's useless - since DVI is also digital...

Hell, no. Such converters come in boxes, and are quite pricey. So yeah, these adapters are useless. Don't ask me why they're being sold then, it doesn't make sense to me.

DVI may also contain analog VGA signals, for more information look up DVI-A, DVI-I and DVI-D.

That's pertains to outputs. And is irrelevant in this case, because phunni doesn't have a DVI output, only a VGA one.

Sorry, maybe wasn't so clear....

It explains why a VGA-DVI converter is not useless even if it doesn't include a analog to digital (signal) converter in some scenarios.

But there aren't any devices with a DVI-I/A input. If you know otherwise, link to one, I'd gladly be proven wrong. Edit: Ok, apparently there actually are such devices. They're very rare though. Most devices have a DVI-I connector for cable compatibility, but they only accept a digital signal.
