Core, Extra, Community databases not downloading after fresh install

Greetings,
This last weekend, I attempted a fresh install of Arch with the lastest build 3.0 kernel.  One thing I noticed that was different from the 2010 installation CD was the first section where you choose source.  In the past you had 2 options.  Network or CD.  The choose source now gives you Core as well as community and extra that you can add if you want to use network. At the minimum for a CD install it says you at least need to check off core and after installation you can go into your pacman.conf file and mirrorlist and set everything up for the additional repos.  This machine runs wireless so anything requireing network would not work until I had everything installed and rebooted.
So being as I was only doing a CD install and not a network install I checked of Core and proceeded with the installation.  All went fine, and once I rebooted I set up my wireless then attempted updates.  Here is where the issue came in.  The only db that installed was archlinux.fr

# pacman -Syyu
downloading core.db
downloading community.db
downloading extra.db
archlinuxfr   :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 100%
Starting Full system upgrade
Nothing to do

So it did not download the core, community, or extra data base nor did it give me any error?

I double checked my pacman.conf to make sure all the repos were uncommented (they were)
Checked mirrorlist to make sure I had all of the USA repos that I wanted uncommented (they were)

I then ran:

# pacman-db-upgrade

After running this, it paused for about 4 seconds then back to the prompt, so it seems as if something ran.  Attempted to sync the repos again with the same result.

So with that being said, I could not do anything. I tried google with a few different search parameters figuring I can't be the ONLY one that has seen this since installing with the new .iso but nothing came up that covered it. My search criteria may not have been good enough to find what I was looking for either so that very well could be on me. I'm going to continue searching but figured I would drop a post here as well.

I also downloaded and burned another .iso from another mirror to eliminate a bad .iso as the problem but this had the same result.

Since this, I decided to re-image my partition with the clone I made prior to starting this.  I had some issues with my current load so this is why I decided on a fresh build.  I have currently fixed those issues so I am back up and running with a fully updated system.  This also means, I would not be able to re-generate any log files or conf files if requested unless I create another partition on one of my 2 installed hard drives and try again with that.

Just wanted to know, if anyone else after installing from the 2011 .iso has seen this issue.

All the best,

Ian

Pacman uses the first mirror from the mirrorlist, unless it's unavailable - which mirror were you using?

Re: Core, Extra, Community databases not downloading after fresh install

karol,
Thanks for the reply.  I had under Any:

Server = http://mirrors.kernel.org/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch

Then under United States:

Server = http://archlinux.supsec.org/$repo/os/$arch
Server = http://cake.lib.fit.edu/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
Server = http://mirrors.cat.pdx.edu/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
Server = http://mirror.ece.vt.edu/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
Server = http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
Server = http://mirror.ancl.hawaii.edu/linux/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
Server = http://mirrors1.kernel.org/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
Server = http://mirrors2.kernel.org/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
Server = http://mirror.mocker.org/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
Server = http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
Server = http://mirror.rit.edu/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
Server = http://mirrors.rutgers.edu/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
Server = http://schlunix.org/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
Server = http://mirrors.lax1.thegcloud.com/arch//$repo/os/$arch
Server = http://mirror.yellowfiber.net/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch

One thing I have seen many times is, if there is any issue with one of the mirrors, you will get an error stating that xxxx can't be downloaded then moves to the next mirror.
Either way you get some kind of error.  This acted like it was downloading each database but you never got the progress bar on any of the community, core, or extra.
archlinuxfr was of course added to my pacman.conf file so it synced with that one.
The pacman.conf had each the community, core, and extra pointing to the mirrorlist as it normally does by default.

Don't use kernel.org for now - http://kernel.org/ still shows maintenance mode - pick another mirror.

You can manually download the databases if needed. Check if you're up to date by comparing e.g. your kernel and pacman version with http://www.archlinux.org/packages/

Re: Core, Extra, Community databases not downloading after fresh install

karol, let me ask you this.  If when syncing the databases prior to it showing all applications ready for updates, will it not go to the next mirror in line if it does not get what it needs from the first one?  And won't it give an error that it was unable to sync to that particular mirror prior to going to the next one?  I thought that is how it has worked but of course I could be wrong.  It certainly seems to work that way on the current updated build on both the desktop and the laptop.

Thanks again for your time and guidance,

Ian

Mods - Could you please move this thread over to the Pacman & Package Upgrade Issues section as I feel it would be more suited there.

Thank you,

Ian
