Ok, as you may know latest xorg-server package in extra is 1.10.3.901-1 (1.10.4 RC1) . It is outdated as of Fri, 12 Aug 2011 16:38:02 -0700, when version 1.10.3.902 (1.10.4 RC2) came out. Later on 19 Aug 2011, xorg-server 1.10.4 was released.
Before updating I was experiencing two different problems:
Visual glitches
Some key bindings not working
1. Occurred if no window was created before issuing 'xrandr --output DVI-0 --auto'.
2. Is same bug (I believe) as this one. The main difference is that I am using 'setxkbmap -layout es -variant dvorak' and I had problems with the "a" and "comma" buttons (i did not tested others ones).
I wondered why xserver wasn't updated in extra and some guys in #archlinux told me that 1.11 is in testing, and that I just had to compile the newer version and hope it fixes my problem. IMHO, and by no means I want to be harsh or something, if a bug-fix-only release is available, common sense and even Arch core principles tell me that it should be placed in the officials repos.
Just my two cents.
Peace.

No-one important reads the forums. File a bug report if the package in [extra] has bugs and the relevant developer will see it.

Well, I flagged the actual xorg-server package as being out-of-date. But considering it's more than a month ago that the update is upstream, I think devs are just waiting 1.11 to be merged in extra while knowing we have buggy software in our repo, although being able to fix the problem (update the package).
I hope no one gets angry because of my criticism because it's in good faith ![]()

Are you sure they know? Who did complain about those bugs? If there are no bug reports, devs may just skip it and go straight to 1.11.

There is no way I can bug-report because Arch guidelines tells one not to report bugs on outdated software.

But it is not just outdated software... it is software with bugs that happens to be fixed with an update. File a bug...

I know it may be a problem in some cases, especially if the package has been marked out of date for a while and yet nobody seems to care ...
1. You can open a thread on the forums or a on ML.
2. You can file a bug anyway - especially if a dev tells you it's OK to do so :-)
3. You can try to compile the new version yourself.

That is because no actual bug was mentioned in the bug report. So that was quite stupid...

So that was quite stupid...
but I posted a link that shows
== Changes since 1.10.3.901 ==
In a minor software update, what those changes could be? new features? funny comments in the source code? or maybe just some bugfixes?
Peace

A bug report should include a detailed description of the bug being reported - what usage causes it, what happens when it occurs, how to reproduce it, etc - and it should have a descriptive title i.e. not "Just to let you know...." .

That's overkill when upstream devs are explicitly telling you that they made some bugfixes. Why reinvent the wheel? be simple? I think I have read that somewhere around here...

So you really think a bug report entitled "Just to let you know...." is OK?
The purpose of the report is to convince the Arch devs to release 1.10.4 to extra before 1.11 moves over from testing. Nothing in that (non-)bug report comes close to achieving that.

I will quote Reporting_Bug_Guidelines
A bug already fixed upstream but not in Arch because the package is not up-to-date.
A package which is not-up-to-date. Use the Flag Package Out-of-Date feature on Arch's packages website
a) Agree.
b) I did.
myself:
There is no way I can bug-report because Arch guidelines tells one not to report bugs on outdated software.
and allan:
But it is not just outdated software... it is software with bugs that happens to be fixed with an update. File a bug..
I will quote a well known computer company:
Software updates ... typically provide fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security...
So what do you mean by "just outdated" software"?
My point here is precisely that we have "just outdated software"
Peace.
