boot messages do not remain visible anymore

I've got 2 computers running arch. I have the command "hwd -y"  as last line in my /etc/rc.local script.
Sometimes after an upgrade the screen blanks and the output does not remain visible. No big deal: I just alter the content of /etc/issue and that's it.
But now that does not work anymore. I can fiddle around with /etc/issue as much as I want but the system will not allow me to enjoy the output generated by 'hwd-y'. Did I miss something?

Somewhere between "too small" and "too large" lies the size that is just right.
