xorg crash with Intel GPU / Gnome 3

Hi,

Running 2.6.39-ck and Gnome 3 via GDM on a Thinkpad T510 I just had an xorg crash;

lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

dmesg (probably unrelated to the crash):

gnome-settings-[4558]: segfault at 7f440374b210 ip 00007f440374b210 sp 00007fff71d463b8 error 14 in libdbus-1.so.3.5.5[7f4403dbc000+42000]

The xorg log with the crash:

At the time of the crash I was listening to music in whatever Gnome 3's default media player is, and viewing the properties of some FLAC files in Nautilus.

Anyone else seen this?

Re: xorg crash with Intel GPU / Gnome 3

I have this exact same problem, I hope someone could help.

Chromium (from repository) is likely to freeze on pages with Flash content (but just sometimes - I cannot predict when will the same page freeze the browser), which is really annoying. The problem is that I cannot close the program, nor fire up htop to kill the task, not even run a simple "ps aux | grep chrom" as it would be freezed also. If I halt the computer it fails on stopping smartd daemon, so just hard reset helps.

Picasa run under wine has also crashed X.org server, just like chromium. When the program does not freeze, then it restarts X server and GDM also. Now I could grab at last some logs, see below:

Running kernel 2.6.38-ck with the same software version shown above by @Fackamato on a HP 8440p notebook.

Re: xorg crash with Intel GPU / Gnome 3

pasting only the backtrace doesn't help anyone. Paste the whole Xorg.0.log

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Re: xorg crash with Intel GPU / Gnome 3

Thank you @wonder, I have updated my post with the logs. If there would be anything more to show, then I would be happy to post more details.

UPDATE:
using Openbox as windows manager without DE seems to work like a charm without any issue (no freeze, no GDM restart, no segfaults). This suggest to me that the problem could be with gnome-shell. But do not know how to verify sad

Re: xorg crash with Intel GPU / Gnome 3

Now (after upgrading xf86-video-intel from 2.15.0-1 to 2.15.0-2) I cannot login into Openbox any more, I got a strange crash with no logs after restart. Please see some photos of the screen here.

After few restarts I tried with stock kernel, which seems to work fine till now (with no extra kernel parameters, though I use i915.modeset=1 with kernel-ck)

---

EDIT: the kernel panic crash is not connected to this issue, I found out that I had some driver problems with my wireless card in the same time so please disregard it!

Re: xorg crash with Intel GPU / Gnome 3

With no extra kernel parameters the system seems quite stable now (with rare X server restarts or crashes), so I removed "i915.modeset=1" from GRUB. Which is quite strange as I think the system runs KMS anyway...

Re: xorg crash with Intel GPU / Gnome 3

Crash reported in post #7 seems to be ok now - it must have been cause by a totally different issue. After changing I/O scheduler from cfq (suggested in other topics) seems to sort out the strange crash.

Unfortunatelly Xorg server restarts  - with above logs - happens occasionally: most of time when chromium is loading some pages. Sorry for much posts, I hope I could soon write about solution also.

Re: xorg crash with Intel GPU / Gnome 3

Sandy Bridge user?

Read this:

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a … orks&num=1

Whatever the case is, the Intel driver problems seem to be known all over the internet and are related to 2.6.39 breaking something.

Re: xorg crash with Intel GPU / Gnome 3

I was trying to read the news about the tornadoes in Massachusetts this morning and had this issue when I went to the following article from both chrome and firefox...
http://news.discovery.com/earth/massach … 10602.html
Every time I go to it... boom... X crashes.  Similar setup too (Gnome3)

Re: xorg crash with Intel GPU / Gnome 3

Thank you for updates. I am using a mobile CPU (Intel i-7 620m) which seems to me a 32 nm Arrandale, not Sandy Bridge. Anyway, I will try the kernel parameter given in the linked article.

From yesterday I updated to xf86-video-intel-git from AUR, which I hope also corrects some problems. After upgrade I did not have any Xorg server crash, though resume from suspend is likely to fail with some nice "fatal exception in interrupt" kernel panic messages. I will try with above kernel options and also with noapic and nolapic parameters. I tired with acpi=off but this was too offensive try smile

Will write about final results.

@fowler: the cited article loads fine on my computer in chromium (11.0.696.71). Well, other pages was to crash X server, but I do not have this issue after xf86-video-intel-git upgrade.

Re: xorg crash with Intel GPU / Gnome 3

I had exactly the same problem, not only with Chromium but also with Firefox and Calibre, different intel chipset (i915) but using Gnome3. After every crash the backtrace pointed to /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/librecord.so. I tried to install the git version of the intel driver but the problem persisted, and always librecord was on top of the backtrace.
So I created a file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-modules.conf with

Section  "Module"
             Disable "record"
EndSection

and disabled the record extension, the problem disappeared so far even with stock intel drivers.

EDIT: Maybe it is self-suggestion but gnome3 as a whole appears to be faster without the record extension, I am trying all programs and web pages that caused Xorg to crash but no problem so far ...

Re: xorg crash with Intel GPU / Gnome 3

Thank you @erm67 very much, your hack seems to work here also.

Though Gnome 3 is likely to complain about the missing library on every start and also some apps' hotkeys are not working - but at last no random crash. Any updates on a more elegant solution is still welcomed smile

I have an HP Pavilion Dv6 series.
I'd like to know if there's anything I can do to solve this other than downgrading or disabling librecord.

-- Edit --
Another thing I'd like to point out, I'm not using the testing repo, these updates are at the mainstream repo now.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: xorg crash with Intel GPU / Gnome 3

rmanola if you're not using any package from testing nor kernel 2.6.39 which we don't know because you don't say what kernel are you using, I'd suggest you should open a thread elsewhere.

This post is related to kernel 2.6.39 and it's related troubles with intel drivers.

Re: xorg crash with Intel GPU / Gnome 3

That's right, my kernel is  2.6.38, I didn't pay attention to that fact. I'll open another thread.

Thank you @erm67 very much, your hack seems to work here also.

Though Gnome 3 is likely to complain about the missing library on every start and also some apps' hotkeys are not working - but at last no random crash. Any updates on a more elegant solution is still welcomed smile

Probably, or better hopefully, we have to wait for the next release of librecord ....... :-) Anyway fortunately only very few apps need the extension, and none that I really miss atm. Only maybe syndaemon that should disable the synaptics touchpad while typing, btw are you also using a synaptics touchpad?

@rmanola try disabling the record extension, I had the problem also with the latest 2.6.38 kernel, it only worsened with 2.6.39 and disabling the extension has solved it for  me at a little cost .... While googling for a solution I remember that also a lot of people with ATI drivers had similar problems so I think it isn't even strictly related to the intel driver.

EDIT: Considering all this I re-enabled the record extension and unchecked Disable touchpad while typing in gnome system settings, no chrashes yet in the last 10 minutes ...... But today I have no time to really test if it is enough to uncheck that to have a stable system .....

I think this post just saved me a hedious problem I've been having with my PC... even in different distros. I tried your suggestion, and after restarting X, I noticed that Workrave (http://www.workrave.org/) wouldn't work without the "record" extension.

My guess is that Workrave is to blame for my random crashes for the last three months. Let's hope it's just that. smile
