converting rpm package to archlinux

I am new to Arch and linux in general. Can I convert a RedHat or SuSE RPM file to an archlinux package without having to recompile the code on Arch?

Appreciate any pointers.

Re: converting rpm package to archlinux

You can, but you don't want to. Recompiling the code is the correct way to do it.

That said, there are occasions when the source code is not available - in those cases, create an Arch package using rpmunpack or rpmextract.

Thanks. Are instructions available for how to use rpmunpack or rpmextract to convert to Arch package?

Search the wiki (and google as well if needed). In fact, you should do that before posting, in future.

There probably aren't specific instructions - you're required to find out about the Arch packaging process in general, how rpmunpack (or extract) works, and how to put the two together. You may find examples of similar packages in ABS or the AUR.

Re: converting rpm package to archlinux

Searching for 'rpm' in the wiki gives a variety of links, mainly to printer drivers. The same general process which works for them can be used for other rpm packages as well (depending on the specific package, of course). Please read and understand this first though.

Re: converting rpm package to archlinux

Lots of examples in aur of packages extracting binary only crud from .rpm. But as said, building from source is better and generally faster to get working.
