When using URXVT on my local system if I ssh into a remote machine and a command that has color output (such as colordiff, ls, vim with syntax highlighting) it does not work but it does locally so I know that it isn't a issue client side (my machine) directly. If I use another terminal like xterm everything works as expected though, is there something I need to do ether to the remote machine or my local machine to get color output working on remote connections?

Make sure TERM is set right, and that the remote have the terminfo file. If it doesn't then copy it yo ~/.terminfo/r/ on the remote, if it complains about it being too long then upgrade the remote or just rename it and set TERM to that name.

TERM on the local machine or the remote machine? I already have the term info file copied over to the remote machine.

Ahhh I think I know what is going on TERM says "rxvt-unicode-256color" and the terminfo file that was copied over is "rxvt-unicode" does the -256color part make a difference?
