Using wine to play GTA2 ?? Direct X issue

When I run the gta2manager.exe, it tells me I have an inadequate version of directx. I've tired installing 6.1a, 9.0c and even 10. Has anyone encountered a problem like this? I haven't seen this game run on linux, but people have told me it works great.

I've tired the wine website for help. The wine site hasn't been very helpful with my particular problem so I figured it was a linux/wine configuration. Everyone that has this game working through Wine is using ubuntu. Is there a library (linux side) that I need to install? Maybe a videocard driver issue? idk
