I am using Digikam on LXDE.
Follwing the recent upgrade to version 2.1.1, Digikam fails to start correctly, giving the above error. It then attempts to connect to the database, but continues trying indefinitely. Cancelling the attempt results in it loading with the warning that it will not function correctly.
Downgrading to version 2.1.0 resolves the problem.

You can have a look on these bug reports at digikam directly:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=282047
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=281767#c13
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=281838
They have the same issue as you. I have discovered the same, but helped me to set the database directory manually by command line parameter to my Pictures directory which contains digikam.db

Thanks, ise.
It's not a big problem as far as I'm concerned, so I think I'll stick with 2.1.0 until this bug is fixed.
I just thought it was worth reporting in case anyone else was having the same problem.
