Since yesterday, for no apparent reason, each time i login upowerd uses 100% CPU and never goes down. I'm using XFCE and everything is up to date. I didn't find anything relevant around here, so anyone has any idea how to solve this? it is killing my battery life!

After some testing i found out that the acpi_call command to shut down my Nvidia card (Asus U30JC with Optimus enabled) was triggering the upowerd rampage. I downgraded the upower package from 0.9.8-2 to 0.9.7-2 and everything is back to normal. I didn't go through the upower changelog, but something must have changed in the daemon that didn't like the nvidia being shutted down. Anyone has seen something like this?

You could try to bisect the problem using git and report bugs to the upstream bugtracker about that.

I hope this is not considered necro-bumping, but I thought it to be relevant. I just noticed I had the same problem with upower 0.9.8-2 and acpi_call. Since I did not have 0.9.7-2 in my pacman cache anymore I decided to try 0.9.9-1 in testing first. For me this solved the problem as well.

I had this problem too. I couldn't downgrade upower because the packages weren't there. But I figured out that if you make the acpi calls to turn off the nvidia card after the xorg server has been loaded, then upowerd doesn't freak out and use 100% of your cpu. Even if you logout and back in it still works.
