This is a recurring problem. After logging out, the system freezes on a process. When I log back in as that user, the desktop is incomplete. The icons are no longer on the desktop, and the background is missing (the splash screen for simple login manager is visible). Sometimes the cursor dissapears.
This happened three times so far. The past two times I removed the users and then made new users. This time the problem happened while logged in as root, I was using gparted.
There is another thread that deals with a similar problem: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=126869
As per that thread, I issued the command: xfwm &
This solves some of the problem by restarting the window decorator process. But my desktop still has no background image or icons, nor the ability to right click the desktop.
I am thinking it has something to do with a process crashing. I could not find out what might be causing the problem, and what process I need to restart.

It is xfdesktop that draws the background and icons so try
xfdesktop &
to get them back.

That is amazing, thanks! Everything is as it should be now after restarting that process.
