Interesting. But, when I opened that site, it looks like that the site hasn't been updated for 3 years. Latest post was on 8th July 2008.

I don't mean to be the wet blanket, but I always thought it was silly for women (or Christians) or other groups to separate themselves from "the pack" in the software world. Who you are has no bearing on your opportunities in the FOSS world, so what difference does it make? It only serves to segregate people.

Just my $0.02.

It may be because they are minorities and would like to be heard or because they want to do it their way.
Just as we have many FOSS media players, we can have many conferences. Why? Because one size doesn't fit all - sometimes quite literally. Not everyone is fine with an over-sized T-shit and free beer, some (slim & petite) ladies might want to wear those T-shirts in public, not only doing housework, outdoor work or to sleep. They want to look good and not like they're wearing a sackcloth.
Beer & pizzas don't sit well with everyone. Can I have some fresh juice and a salad with feta?

Most Christians and many women are fine attending the regular events, but may like the Christian / HackFem versions too.

Re: hackfem

So you're saying that they view the special groups as an "and" and not "instead of" when it comes to being involved?

At least the people I knew did.

FOSS is about choice and DIY. Yes, sometimes efforts may get splintered this way, but you get what you want. If they don't feel the existing events / distros suit them, they're free to create their own.

Re: hackfem

I didn't mean to suggest we should all work on only one piece of software per task, or one distro. Choice is definitely what makes the FOSS world so great. It's the social side of these splintered groups that baffle me. For example, your religion is not going to influence your coding or documentation style. Neither will your sex or orientation. It's just strange to me.

I have no idea why would someone create e.g. Ubuntu Christian Edition. Trying to get more women into engineering always felt a bit ... desperate ;P Most kindergarten teachers are female and nobody seems to have a problem with that.

Re: hackfem

I'm in the same boat. Anyway, I don't want to derail the topic...

Meskarune: Have you been able to figure out what happened to the group since they disappeared? Maybe they changed names or joined another female-oriented LUG (that's pretty much what they are...).
