no audio - not a fresh install

hey there, I was wondering if anyone has had any issues with alsa, audacious and audio in general completely crashing? I can't launch alsamixer as I get a "cannot open mixer: Connection refused" message, the volume mixer has disappeared, vlc freezes and now won't launch, audacious also won't launch, also using the amixer button keys, has left a heap of amixer +5 master and -5 master, and toggle processes in the task manager, and there are 3 audacious process's running..I run xfce4 on archlinux, and am using systemd if that helps
