So finally after many days spent on testing different de's and software I ended up with MATE, gnome-commander, caja (aka Nautilus), GPicView, Leafpad, Audacious, LibreOffice and all the other pieces which all seem to build a system that suit me best. Or... maybe I'm wrong here and there, but still somewhere very near the ultimate answer.
Now it's time to make all that run flawlessly. And I'm a type of guy who usually runs his windows system on something a one (sic!) gig partition. All highly customized with a bunch of bloat simply removed (nLite does the magic).
So what do you guys can recommend me on Arch? Is re-compiling stuff with yaourt -Sb generally a good idea? Or, which of the default packages from the "base" catalogue may not be really needed for everyday desktop work? Is there something 'big' I could safety just get rid of (i.e. do not install)?
I'm well aware that running benchmarks via wine may not be to measure the performance, but hey... I got something like ~2500 3DMark points here instead of like 12000 something on a windows system (some machine, ATI x600 card). Does it really have to be that bad?
Thanks in advance!

And so I did. I installed linux-ck-pentm instead of what I got before. So now the system won't boot up at all, it hangs just after changing the resolution. All I have is a black screen with some gray stripes. Any ideas?
